Reserva Ecologica Antisana — Attraction in Cuyuja

Otherworldly landscapes, beautiful birding, never seen anywhere else! Visited on 13th May 2023.

The car service we have been using for the last three months now (a big shoutout to Xavier Transporte Quito - +593-99-503-6252, available on WhatsApp as well, for excellent cars and even better drivers who speak fluent English and Spanish of course) picked my wife and me from our apartment in Quito at 6:30AM. We headed to Tambor Condor, a private cabin with restaurants. They have hummingbird feeders, but it is also a great place to watch the Andean Condors jump off the face of the cliff into the ravine and then catch the thermals to fly them above the cliffs (these birds really hate flapping their giant 10 ft wingspan wings).

Our expert birding guide, Gabriel Raza (+593-98-263-5798, available on WhatsApp as well) joined us with his birding scope and his binoculars. His ability to identify the birds by their sound and from a great distance is amazing. And then he will pull out his app on the phone and show what we should be looking for. He has been the best bird guide we have had ever and we used a few other excellent guides before Xavier found Gabriel.

Highly recommend layered warm clothing, rain coat, good boots, warm hat for this place. We forgot our second layer and we borrowed some from Xavier and Gabriel. It was cold in the morning and even more so in the afternoon when it gets really foggy and drizzles.

After the birding at Tambor, we continued toward the La Mica lake and stopped on the side of a stream where we had wonderful sightings of many birds including the Ecuadorian Hillstar hummingbirds. As we kept climbing higher while driving towards the lake and the vista of the gorgeous snow and cloud covered Antisana volcano, we found a very different landscape, the ground covered with beds of alpine shrubs with their beautiful carpets and flowers.

We found many white-tailed deers with the males having reindeer like antlers. We stopped at La Mica lake and did a short walk to the edge of the lake. It was drizzling, blustery and cold, but we got the see the cute Grass Wrens singing...

Avec ma copine nous voulions faire la routa del condor depuis papallacta. Étant un habitué de la montagne et de la randonnée (traversée de l'Equateur sur 1200km à pied notamment), je suis très surpris par le niveau d'incompétence des personnes qui organisent ce parc. Il y a un gros contraste entre l'entrée officiel du parc et le sentier qui se trouve derrière. L'entrée est payante, il y a une cabane bien propre, avec deux guides sympathiques et qui semblent compétents. Il y a une carte approximative du sentier que nous devions suivre. En effet les guides étaient surpris des chaussures que nous avions (elles étaient basses) mais honnêtement cela n'aurait rien changé. La "routa del condor" n'est en fait qu'une addition de marécage (où l'on s'enfonce jusqu'au genoux dans la boue). Chemin défoncé par les vaches, glissant et profondément dangereux (glisser peux mener 10m plus bas, dans un lac sans fond). Il y a des parties importantes qui n'existe simplement pas, et où suivre le gps (bas de carte openstreetmap) ne sert a rien voir peut-être une mauvaise idée (exemple: la descente sur le lac s'effectue 200m au sud de ce qui peut être indiqué sur les cartes). La merde de vache se répend dans tout les cours d'eau, dans les lacs et marécage, vous marchez dessus, et vous en avez de partout. Les guides nous avaient parlé d'une seule barrière barbelés à passer, c'est un mensonge, nous en avons compté 8 au total sur les 6 premiers kilomètres. Il a fallu les escalader une par une (ce qui est toujours une bonne idée pour s'ouvrir la cuisse). Nous nous sommes arrêté au premier campement avant de faire demi tour ce matin après une nuit passé dans la tente. Il n'y a AUCUNE indication, pas une seule, sans un gps et une carte qui fonctionne hors ligne c'est impossible d'arriver au bout. J'ai emmené ma copine avec moi, qui n'avait qu'une expérience partiel de la montagne, en me disant que 6 km sur un chemin connu et tracé pouvait faire une bonne première journée, avant de monter voir l'Antisana. A great place to hike and be with nature. There are a couple of trails one can take. The main one is about two miles and it goes to lookout points where, if you are lucky, you can see the majestic Antisana on one side and the Mica lake on the other side. The temps during the day are between 35 and 45 degrees F. It is normally windy so you feel the cold temps; must bring a warm sweater, a windbreaker/raincoat, a scarf, and something to keep your head warm.
