The setting for El Churro is magnificent. Surrounded by jungle, it falls majestically into a small pool of water, continuing on as brooks. As in most places that cater to visitors, the paths to and from the waterfall are one way. The walk from the parking to the base of the waterfall is not very steep, but it is a narrow passage through a nature trail. I did see a couple of seniors making their way up to the waterfall. However, on the way back (the one way path) is more steep and challenging. I personally felt that the visiting seniors should be able to take the same way back, just because the other path may be too strenuous for them. That aside, the waterfall is beautiful, we visited in late November, and the water was very cold, but we were told that many people swim or wade in the pool underneath the rushing water when the weather is nice. As foreigners, we had to pay $3 admission fee. We enjoyed our hike...
Read moreEl Chorro Waterfall, Giron, Ecuador. Don't know why they have it listed as Giron Waterfalls - it's about 5 KM outside the city. Anywho, the El Chorro Cascada are worth a visit if you like waterfalls, and who doesn't? You actually can't see the beginning of the waterfall, it's starts way up the mountain as a single waterfall, moves down the mountain and splits into 2 waterfalls, then the two streams reconnect to form the waterfall that you see in the visiting area. If you're an avid climber, you can work your way up to the top of the falls. At 66. I'll pass, and take the short route to the side of the falls. $2 to get in, $1 if your over 65 (yippee!) $.30 to enter the area. About an hour and a half ride from Cuenca. I'd go back for a second look - I was there on a Sunday, which was relatively crowded. I prefer fewer...
Read moreBreathtaking beauty! At least for a guy from the Midwest this waterfall is just plain jaw-dropping. And for the really really NOT faint of heart try the zip line across the canyon and back. The guide told me it’s the second longest zip line in Ecuador and I believe it! Had to be 30-45 seconds going across. But caution! The climb to the second zip line is extremely strenuous if you are used to being at sea level.
We had a driver from the south of Cuenca. Our entire trip was about four hours, including the round-trip, hiking up to the lower waterfalls, doing the zip line, and a quick drive through the city of...
