Playa Montañita is deserving of its reputation as a haven for surfers, backpackers, partygoers and bohemian hipster types. One minute spent anywhere in the bar and Lou get strewn main part of town is enough to give a person seeking quiet and solitude a fright that won’t soon be forgotten. If alcohol lubricates the action in town, open use of drugs (clearly in evidence several times during the course of my visit) “enlightens” the action.
However, if one stays at the extreme north end of town, near the towering cliff that buttresses the rocky shoreline and breakwater, there is a much quieter atmosphere and a certain peace to be had simply from watching the exceptional athleticism and grace of many of the surfers 🏄🏼♂️ as they practice their craft, sometimes seeming to balance impossibly atop the wildness of the waves.
There is SOME good food to be had and there are several nice lodges and hostels in town but it’s certainly worth doing some careful research if you’re hoping to enjoy a quiet stay on the beach...and probably worth looking into the much quieter town of Olon, just a couple of mikes up the...
Read moreMontanita is well known for its surfing and a great beach town. The ecuadorian tourists should be ashamed of themselves. The population here explodes on weekends as busloads of people pour in for some beach time. Unfortunately they totally disrespect the town and the beautiful location. Just walk the beach when the masses have gone home. You will find everything from dirty diapers, take out containers, broken umbrellas and broken bottles and cans left along the shore to be washed into the ocean with the next high tide. Even the people that fish and rely on the ocean for their food and livelihood toss their outboard motor oil containers overboard or on the beach. Do they not realize they are ingesting this waste when they eat the seafood? Or swim in that garbage? It s heartbreaking to see paradise become a toxic waste dump. Why are s it so hard for them to take their garbage with them and dispose them of it...
Read moreMontanita Is a fun place to hang at the beach . The town itself is a mix of bohemian vibe and tourist trap. On the weekends it absolutely nuts at night, so if you are not into the party scene, do yourself a favor and stay outside of town. There are plenty of good options on the point, just a few minutes beach stroll from town. As a surfer I can not really give a great review, but conditions were not good and it was a holiday week so the competition for the few waves there were was fierce. Lots of good food options in town including a small Mexican food place called Guadalajara, where I ate the best Mexican food I've had since I left California. Of all the beach and party towns I've been to I'd give it a solid 6 on a scale...
