The Great Aten Temple, located in the ancient city of Akhetaten (modern-day Tell el-Amarna), was one of the largest and most important religious structures dedicated to the sun god Aten. It was built by Pharaoh Akhenaten during his reign in the 18th Dynasty, around 1346 BC, as part of his radical religious reforms that focused on the exclusive worship of Aten, the sun disk, over the traditional Egyptian gods.
The temple was designed to be open and airy, reflecting the sun god's connection to light and openness. Unlike traditional Egyptian temples, which were dark and enclosed, the Great Aten Temple had a vast open courtyard and no roofs, allowing sunlight to flood the area. It was situated on a grand scale, with massive walls and spacious halls, although much of it is now in ruins.
The temple was at the heart of Akhenaten's new capital, Akhetaten, and was intended to be the center of religious life for the worship of Aten. Rituals and ceremonies would have been conducted here, and it was also where Akhenaten, his family, and his officials would perform daily offerings to the sun god.
