Qasr Qaroun Temple is an ancient archaeological site located near Lake Qarun in Fayoum, Egypt. This well-preserved temple dates back to the Ptolemaic era, around the 3rd century BCE, and is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, who was worshiped in the region. The temple is relatively small, yet its intricate design and historical significance make it a fascinating destination for visitors interested in Egypt’s rich history.

The temple consists of several rooms and corridors, with beautifully carved stone walls. Its unique feature is the alignment with the sun, which illuminates the inner sanctum during the winter solstice, a phenomenon that attracts many tourists every year. The surrounding area is also home to the ruins of an ancient city, known as Dionysias in the Greco-Roman period, which adds to the historical richness of the site.

Qasr Qaroun Temple provides visitors with a glimpse into ancient Egyptian religious practices and offers an atmospheric experience in the quiet, desert surroundings of Fayoum. It's a must-visit for history enthusiasts and those...

Qasr Qarun An archaeological site is a temple in an ancient city located near Lake Qarun in Fayoum Governorate. It is known that the “Qasr Qarun Temple” is a temple from the Greek era, and it has nothing to do with Qarun, who was mentioned in the Holy Qur’an; And about whom he said: In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, “So We swallowed him and his abode of the earth.” God Almighty spoke the truth. Qasr Qarun temple, as mentioned in archaeological sources, is a temple from the Greco-Roman era and was dedicated to the worship of the god Sobek and “Dionysius” the god of wine and love “at the Romans”, but the inhabitants of the region in Islamic times called it Qarun Palace for its presence near Lake Qarun adjacent to it; Which was named by this name due to the large number of centuries and bays in it. At first it was called Lake (Al-Qarun), and it was diverted to Lake Qarun; Knowing that this lake was originally the remnant of Lake Morris in Pharaonic history, and as for the number of rooms in the temple, it is less than a hundred rooms, and it was used to store grain and the uses of the temple priests at this time. As for the road that connects the city in which the temple is located “Qasr Qarun” and Alexandria, scientific facts confirm the existence of a land road linking Fayoum and Alexandria, and it was used to transport goods during the Roman days from Fayoum and the governorates of Upper Egypt to the port of Alexandria and then to Europe. One of the recent studies confirmed the sun’s perpendicularity to the Qasr Qarun temple on December 21 of each year, and a committee of archaeologists was formed, which confirmed what was stated in the study and that the sun perpendicular to the Holy of Holies in the temple at this time and the perpendicularity lasts...

Visited on 12 October 2022 60 EGP Well preserved small temple on the western end of Lake Qaroun. It is Ptolemaic in construction and started around 320BC. However the lack of inscriptions makes a definite date difficult. It is likely a temple to Sobek as there is a relief of the crocodile God on the roof along with another figure of a king. The only other artwork inside the temple is the Ptolemaic winged sun which is visible as you enter the sanctuary which contains three niches. The temple is aligned in a way that on 21st December ( the solstice )the sun shines into the sanctuary at sunrise. When we visited we were the only visitors there which would have been good except that the guardians/tipseekers shepherded our every move which made it feel uncomfortable.

(The term "palace of Qarun" is a misnomer) is a Ptolemaic temple (323-30 BC) that has not been accurately dated due to the lack of inscriptions. Built of yellow limestone blocks, it is nearly entire, however the exterior has been partially restored and elements of the internal structure have been reinforced by the Antiquities Department. It may appear little from the outside, but it is a genuine maze of chambers, hallways, cellars, tunnels, stairways, higher floors, and various nooks and crannies on the inside, making it a fascinating location to explore. There are no inscriptions, but a winged sun soars over the entryway, and a winged sun flies over the roof (reachable by any of the two).

it may look a small pharonic temple with no much to see inside, but as soon as you enter and hear the description from your tourist guide you get astonished with the complicated design of this temple. it has two stores underground and 2 up. with hidden places to hide the gold and valuables. it is designed such that the sun will enter the temple only once a year in December. there should be a statue which the sun will shine on but it was moved to the Egyptian museum. the place needs more attention from the government. there is no WCs nor gift shops and some parts need reconstruction.
