We had a tour organised with Ahmada to afterwards stay at the Rees Campground in the White Desert.
First was the Black Desert. Black mountain lots of basalt everywhere from volcano eruptions. Impressive
It followed the Agapate valley, where we learned that it was difficult to reach for camels as the sand on way there was very soft and that made it hard for them.
Then it followed the White Desert which can only be described as an open air museum with all the natural rock formations everywhere.
On the way to the camp we made a final stop at Crystal Mountain, which was another amazing sight to behold.
But the highlight of the visit to the White Desert was Rees Campground with Ahmada our driver and guide.
Amazing evening with his camp cooked food. We have even had roasted marshmallows on the open fire! Excellent day. We had also a very good breakfast prepared by him as well on the next morning. We slept on a tent, that turned out very warm with the sleeping bags and blankets.
Woke up very early in the morning and went and meditate on top a dune with the sunrise....
Read moreSome 35 to 40 kilometers northeast of the Farafra Oasis lies one of the most beautiful locations in the Western Desert: the White Desert (Sahara al-Beida). The foundation for this natural phenomenon was laid some 80 million years ago when sea levels were much higher, and what is now North Africa was part of the shallow Tethys Ocean. When this ocean dried up/disappeared, a thick layer of limestone remained in some locations, which eroded over many, many centuries, sometimes resulting in the most unusual rock formations. These bizarrely shaped rocks are now (and rightly so) a popular excursion destination. It's easy to get lost in the desert, so make sure you have an experienced guide-driver! An overnight stay in the desert is quite special. Due to the lack of light pollution, the Milky Way is clearly visible here (provided the full moon doesn't interfere), and if you're lucky, you might catch a glimpse of one of the rare desert inhabitants, such as a fennec fox or a gazelle. A beautiful...
Read moreThe White Desert is an amazing site and gives an otherworldly experience. We went there on a night camping trip as a big family group. There's no mobile network, no shops, electricity, or toilets, but it's the best experience of being in nature. Daytime was pretty hot, but the evenings and nights were relaxingly cool (we visited in April). If you have enough time in Egypt, make sure to visit this pristine location. The rock formations are pretty unique, and you can make out images of different animals. For me, the highlight was the serenity, vastness, and unique topography of this place. It's great for kids as well as they explore nature, play with sand, gaze at the stars in the night, and follow fox footprints in...
