San Tan Trail to Hedgehog and reconnecting to San Tan is just under six miles. Elevation change is not terribly drastic. I would call this a moderate trail. You can hike, mountain bike, jog, and horseback ride. Don't have your own horse? Schedule a guided ride! There are a few steepish slopes but easily manageable. The desert floral, Saguaro cactus, and mountains are beautiful! Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. Wear protective hiking boots or appropriate gear for your activity. A camel pack is recommended, along with sunglasses and a hat. Restrooms available at entrance and $6 to park or you can purchase an annual pass to all parks. Wildlife I've seen are foxes, coyotes, snakes, roadrunners, owls, eagles, hawks, ground squirrels, lizards, and cactus wrens. If you take a dog, it must be on a leash and bag its poop. Makes for friendly and clean trails and respects the other trail users. There are various other trails with shorter or longer distances. Grab a free map inside the station before you hit the trail. It's helpful. Don't recommend Yunmai Trail unless you like walking in deep sandy wash. Overall, San Tan Regional is a beautiful place to explore our gorgeous Arizona desert.

I had done the Goldmine Trail from the other parking lot and someone told me it is easier to come up the back side. Totally true! I went early February and this was a very pleasant walk. There were only a couple of sections on the trail that had an incline that burned my thigh and calf muscles. Once I got up to the bench, I had a nice little break before going up the peak for the tip top view. It was gorgeous! You have to pay $6 to get in but there was lots of parking. There were mountain bikers and horse riders along with avid hikers. A lot of the trail starts by going through sand and washes but the trail is marked very well and maintained properly. The desert view is beautiful (I had to take an allergy pill before hand). Once at the peak, there is a nice view of the valley. Novice hikers can do this trail. Bring plenty of water (and then some)!

Let me start with I really enjoy this park and the trails are fairly well maintained. As noted in other reviews, there is ample parking (an issue at other parks). That said, Maricopa Parks Department REALLY needs to build out more trails here. It gets extremely busy on the 6-7 trails here. There is sufficient land and terrain variability in this park to build many more fun trails. There is enough that they can build more multi-use and single use trails. Ex. Trails that are for mountain bikes only and trails that are for hikers only. This park easily sees enough visitors to justify this. I have talked with other visitors and they all agree the park needs more trails and they would be happy to volunteer to build them. The park dept has the Ditch Witch trail building machine and lots of volunteers, so let’s get this done! Hear our plea! Build more trails!!!!

I love this mountain for hiking, mountain biking, and getting out of the house with the kids. I’ve been on every trail many times and rode every trail on my bike in one setting one day and it took 24 miles. Great desert views over the southeast valley. It’s also has the smoothest trails for mountain biking if you’re trying to get away from all the rocks in Arizona. There are 2 main entrances one from the north and the other from the east. The entrance from the south is hardly used. It’s also interesting to watch fireworks during the 4th of July if you like a quieter show and 700 different events all over the valley. They also have reptiles on display to see at the east entrance which is great for the kids to enjoy. We captured a rare snow storm on the Superstition Mountains in the background on 2-22-19.

I have very limited hiking experience, but this place is AWESOME! There are nine trails you can choose from all different in length and difficulty. I went on the San Tan trail which is the longest trail among them, and you cross all the other trails as you go through. It's also good for mountain biking, as a bunch of them passed me by this morning. (There are some semi-steep areas. I watched a couple go down one and was like nope. But I don't bike anyway) I went from 7am-10am and we didn't run into too many people, it was really nice. There is a day fee to get in, per vehicle, or you can get an annual pass. They also have a visitors center at the entrance with free maps, a gift shop, and a learning center. 👍 🏜️

I decided to do a 50k for my 50th and San tan trails seemed to be the place to do it. Aaaand doing a 50k I saw the ENTIRE park and feel qualified to review it. First. It's beautiful, go for sunrise, highly worth it. Trails are wide and pretty maintained which is good because besides the race people there was a fair amount of people, bikes and horses. Everyone was super polite. Now what they don't tell you in the brochures. The rocks. It is very rocky, pointy rocks and riverbed rocks and desert rocks, basically ALL the rocks. And very loose rocks on incline and declines. So bring GOOD and comfortable hiking shoes and your balance. But HIGHLY recommend.
