Ok, since we looks everywhere to have the right information, here’s the last real informations to to this hike that we did on February 15th 2022. MEETING/STARTING HOUR: 9:00AM and I don’t know if there an other later. PRICE: Total price we paid is 1+3+2.50+6$ = 12.50$ per person. 3$ for entrance fees for Cerro verde national park + 1$ for the parking (paid at the lower gate and got a receipt) + 2.50$ for a contribution for the explanations by an official guide of the park + 6$ for the entrance of Santa Ana volcano national park. WHAT TO BRING (in February): Since the elevation is high the sun is hitting, so don’t forget sunscreen and a hat, walk sticks if you want (I don’t use it), sports shoes or boots, shorts (it was perfect for me), a sweater or/and a light jacket, no gloves required, snacks, water. WEATHER: isn’t because you paid that you’ll have access to the top of the volcano. If for example it’s too windy, they gonna close the access or if there thunder storm as well since the lightning are hitting the top of the volcano. LEVEL / difficulty: It’s an medium / hard hike and I would say closer to hard. Note that I’m a good hiker. But still really doable with kids. DURATION: Minimum 2 hours to go 30 minutes on the side of the crater and minimum 2 hours to come back. SAFETY: I read so many reviews about police officers and guards that you had to pay or something like this. But the police officers are chilling in the parking and they’re mostly a decoration haha actually it’s good because they’re keeping an eye on the cars even we never got scared or harassed or see anyone suspicious, on the parking on during the hike. EXPLANATIONS: The official way (that’s also the easiest if you don’t speak Spanish and if you don’t wanna spend a lot of money on a private guide) is to go to the national park of the volcano Cerro Verde for 8:30 - 9:00am. There’s clean toilets and more important, few little shops to have fruits, water, coffee, etc on the parking lot for cheap (I got a coffee, fried plantains, 6 bananas and paid 3.50$). While waiting (or after the hike), you can go see the Izalco volcano from the mirador (point of view) since the volcano is right beside. Then AT 9:00AM there’s an official guide from the park that meet us at the entrance of the parking lot (at the actual upper gate of the upper parking: the second gate). We were approximately 14 persons. We left around 9:10, we stop at like 100m at the gate where the path start to have the explanations from the guide. This entrance door is locked, so no access when no guide. TYPE OF HIKE: We started walking with the official guide and went down the Cerro Verde for 40 minutes in a nice path 1.5 m large with some wooden tree tronc steps. Then we walked for 10 minutes on a kinda flat road half paved between the base of the cerro verde and the base of the Santa Ana volcano. Then we arrived at the entrance of “Paintball GO! Xtreme” where our guide gave few cents (for sure less than 1.50$) to the guy at the paintball field fence. We wondered if we would have been able to park there (by Savin hike time and money for the first park) by just paying this guy but we still don’t know if he would agreed…? Then we took a path on the right after this fence and walked for 15 minutes and arrived to the office of the entrance of the park of Volcano Santa Ana where we paid 6$ and they asked our nationality. There’s toilets there and some stuff to buy as snacks and shirts. Then we started the REAL HIKE of the volcano! It was steeper but a nice path in the forest with some rocks steps. The last 30 minutes was in a rocky desert environment but with an amazing 270 degrees view. We crossed 2 guards and they just asked and write down our nationality. Then we spent 30 minutes at the top to take pictures. There’s selling ice-cream at the top if you’re into it! And I asked the guide if I was allowed to come back by myself and he said yes if I remember the way, what I did. We came back in 1:45 (it’s quick) n arrived at the gate at top of cerro verde and the fence was locked but a guy came...
Read moreHiking the Santa Ana Volcano was hands-down one of the most thrilling and rewarding experiences in El Salvador! Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to push your limits with a unique adventure, this volcano delivers an unforgettable mix of natural beauty, physical challenge, and epic views. It includes a stunning crater view – the main reward at the summit is the jaw-dropping crater lake—a surreal, milky turquoise lagoon surrounded by jagged rock walls. The color seems to shift with the light, and the steam rising from the crater reminds you you're standing on an active volcano! Be ready for breathtaking panoramic landscapes – On a clear day, you can see Lake Coatepeque shimmering in the distance, the Pacific Ocean, and even neighboring volcanoes like Izalco and Cerro Verde. It's a photographer’s dream. The trail takes around 1.5 to 2 hours up, depending on your pace, and is moderately challenging. You'll go through a mix of terrain—from shaded forest paths to rocky, exposed slopes. There are several spots to stop, catch your breath, and take in the views. Visitors are required to join a guided group for safety and conservation purposes. The guides are friendly, knowledgeable, and keep a good pace, making sure everyone makes it up and down safely. It is great for nature lovers – The hike is surrounded by beautiful flora and occasional sightings of birds and butterflies. The surrounding Cerro Verde National Park area is lush and peaceful, perfect for a picnic or slower walks if you have extra time. This activity is not for weak, sick or unfit people as they could find it as moderate difficult – while not extremely technical, the hike is a real workout, especially in the final stretch where the incline gets steep and the path becomes rocky. Wear good hiking shoes, bring lots of water, and be ready to sweat. Mornings usually offer the clearest views, but conditions can change quickly. It can be foggy, windy, or very sunny—so pack layers, sunscreen, and a hat. Also, please arrive early – hikes usually begin in the morning around 10:00 AM with ranger groups, and the park has fixed entry hours. Plan to arrive early to register and join a group. Be aware that facilities are basic – bathrooms and small shops are available at the park entrance, but once on the trail, you're on your own. Bring snacks and anything you might need for the 4- to 5-hour round trip. Santa Ana Volcano is a bucket-list hike that combines adventure, natural wonder, and panoramic beauty all in one. While it’s a bit of a physical challenge, the payoff at the top is absolutely worth it. The experience of standing on the edge of a live volcanic crater is something you’ll never forget. Highly recommend for...
Read moreThis volcano is very nice and very accesible!
As others already wrote, there is one bus that leaves at 7 something in the morning from Santa Ana (60ct), and takes you directly to the starting point of the hike. It takes more or less 2 hours, but didnt seem that long for me and crosses beatiful landscapes and coffee plantations.
Once you arrive at the volcano, you can choose if you take the "private" (just not state official) tour of the persons waiting for you at the bus stop. The tour costs 4$ and is a big group, usually everyone of the bus. YOU DONT HAVE TO TAKE THAT TOUR. Also they try to make it seem that they are the official tour, its not. Also someone will ask you to pay 50ct to cross a parking lot. You also dont have to do that, you can also just follow the main road up for a few 100 mtrs until the official entrance to avoid crossing it. Once at the main entrance, official state guides are availiable for tours starting between 8 & 10 pm, which costs 3$ and starts when enough people arrived. I guess the groups are smaller as usually everyone of the bus goes with the "private" guides.
As I wanted to arrive on time to get the 1pm bus to go back to St. Ana town for sure, I took the unofficial guides who left right after the bus arrived. We made it easily until the 1pm bus. The next one arrives at 4pm. Sadly it is obligatory to take a tour, which wouldnt be necesary and usually is quite slow. We were several people who wanted to go faster, so the first guide went quite fast with us and we reached the summit in 1 hour. In general the tour was fine, the guides very nice. For people with experience in hiking it is a very easy hike, with stunning views! If you dont have experience in hiking, it is still totally doable!
Up the summit and the crater lake is just impressive and something I have never seen...
