Kavastu ferry raft is located at Kavastu beach and it crosses the Emajogi river. It is over 100 years old and roughly before year 1999, Kavastu county, among other entities organized a full restoration due to its aging as it suffered severe damages. Up to this day, it runs smoothly. It costs a mere 2 euros for anyone wanting to ride this historic manual operating beauty and this sustains the operation costs. It operates by a rotating wheel which requires a physical clockwise push by whoever is riding. Also, it is good to note that although the river itself has a strong current towards the left, (looking from Kavastu side) the raft is chain tight, therefore allowing a smooth experience while riding. Lots of years ago the main use of it was to cross from one side of the Emajogi river to another with several goods and animals. Being the only manual raft still in use around Estonia, visiting is a must. Definite recommendation for anyone who wants to experience such a beautiful historic masterpiece.

This is a unique service - a man with a rowboat takes solo passengers and their bicycles across for 2EUR and the same man takes larger groups of people and / or cars across with a manually cranked "ferry" that takes a couple of cars or one minivan. The closest bridge is 10km away in Luunja, so the round trip to get to the same spot on the other side of the river is 20km - unthinkable for a pedestrian and an hour of decent pedalling for a bicyclist. During low water levels in the river, the ferry might sit too low for normal low cars to be able to load and unload to the ferry. I checked with the ferry-man - during summer months, he does only maybe 6-8 crossings per day, but when school starts, he does more, since some schoolkids take the ferry as well.

Kavastu parv pidi Eestis olema ainulaadne.
