The Kallur Lighthouse is among the most visited attractions in the breathtaking Faroe Islands. Located on the long and narrow Kalsoy Island, the views you get here are otherworldly. You can reach it via ferry from Klaksvik.
The small white and red painted lighthouse is nestled on the northernmost tip of the Kalsoy Island. Everyone wanting to visit the scenery will go for a hike. Kallur Lighthouse was built in 1927 and is now steadily growing in popularity.
The lighthouse sits on the northernmost point of Kalsoy Island. When in the Faroe Islands, you need absolutely to set aside a full day for this attraction. In order to reach the lighthouse, you will need to take a short ferry ride (20 minutes) from Klaksvik in the Bordoy island, drive through 4 narrow tunnels and eventually hike for an hour.
Kalsoy Island is surrounded entirely by the North Atlantic Ocean. The only way to get to the island is by jumping on the small Kalsoy Island ferry (the ferry is called Sam) that departs from the town of Klaksvík on Borðoy Island. From Kallur Lightghouse you can see the northernmost parts of the islands of Kunoy, Vidoy on Eastern side and Eysturoy on the Western side.
Once you reach Kalsoy Island, make your way north passing through four narrow tunnels along the way. In the end, you will reach the most northernly settlement on the island, Trøllanes.
It will cost you 200 DKK per adult to hike to the lighthouse but it's well worth it.
All hikes to the public lighthouse start from Trøllanes. The hike from the Trøllanes to Kallur Lighthouse takes one hour each way.
The hike to the lighthouse is moderate in difficulty. Initially, the hike is a bit steep without being scaring at all. Then you will walk along the sheep path until you reach the scenery where the lighthouse is located.
Most people will find the hike fairly easy. The scenery you get at the end of the hike is worth every minute of the effort. Expect mud on the path along the route to the lighthouse.

Read moreby far the worst "hike" of the Faroe Island! I would also call it a huge scam! we arrived at 8.30 for the 9 am - ferry. but the waiting line (the boat can only take 12 cars) was already way too busy, so we took the ferry by foot as most of the people who came "too late".. on the Island Kalsoy then, everybody without a car should take the "local bus" as they call it. It was exactly one bus, who took all 75 (!!!) people (most had to stand in the bus for the 30 min ride) to the start of the "hike"... yes, I say "hike" because it is not a real hike. its a 20 min walk to the lighthouse and the James Bond tombstone.
You go to the Faroe Island for silence, nature and uncrowded spots and this is what you get in EVERY other spot on EVERY other hike we did within 2 weeks. But this is just a scam! you do the hike like you were in a organized group of at least 10 people because everybody HAS to do it at this time. On top you have to pay 200 DKK for the hike, 60 DKK for the bus and 200 DKK for the ferry. Thats more than 60 € for a whole day in a massive crowd of tourists. Its okay that the Faroe people earn money with tourism, but this trip was totally NOT worth it! Just go ANYWHERE else on there beautiful islands and you will enjoy it more than this trip.
On top, th people who made it to Kalsoy by car had to wait 2 or 3 ferrry, so 2-4 hours to go back beacause the ferry can just take 12 cars. absolut...
Read moreThis was the highlight of our trip to the Faroe Islands! There's so many cool things to see on this island, that it is not to be missed. Let me give you the step by step on how to get there, and what you'll see.
First, make your way to the town of Klakvik (roughly 45 minutes drive from Torshavn). Then, get in line for the ferry (if driving a car), and there are three lanes; lane 1, locals only, lanes 2 and 3 for tourists. I highly recommend getting there at least 45 minutes prior to departure, as there is only 12 spots on the ferry for small cars.
Then, its a 20 minute scenic boat ride to Kalsoy. You will then drive the one way road, and thru at least 5 creepy tiny, one lane only, claustrophobic old tunnels. As bad as it sound, one of the coolest drives I've EVER done anywhere in the World!
Once you arrive at the very end of the road, you'll be in the tiny town of Trøllanes, the most visited village on Kalsoy island. This is where you can do the medium/hard trek up to the magical beauties of the Kallur lighthouse, as well as visiting the newly gravestone of James Bond!
The other popular attraction is the Seal Woman in the village Mikladalur, where you also have a gorgeous waterfall, and the only cafe/restaurant on the island. This is a great spot to unwind and enjoy the beauty this island has to offer! I highly recommend visit this...
