Kummakivi, a geological marvel is nestled deep within the serene Finnish landscape, in the heart of Ruokolahti, that has captivated locals and travelers for centuries.

The name "Kummakivi" translates to "Strange Rock" in Finnish, a fitting description for this massive boulder, estimated to weigh around 500 tons, which balances precariously atop another rock. Despite its seemingly unstable position, it has remained in place for approximately 11,000 years, defying gravity and logic.

The story of Kummakivi begins during the last Ice Age, when massive glaciers covered the region. As these glaciers advanced and retreated, they carried enormous rocks across the landscape.

Over time, one such boulder was deposited on a smooth, curved bedrock surface, creating the striking formation that exists today. Geological processes, including erosion and weathering, gradually shaped the rock's surroundings, leaving it in its current, seemingly impossible stance.

Long before scientific explanations emerged, the unusual positioning of Kummakivi gave rise to folklore and legends. Locals believed that the rock was placed there by a giant or a troll, reinforcing its mysterious and almost otherworldly presence. This blend of natural wonder and myth only added to the site's intrigue, drawing visitors who marveled at its improbable balance.

Reaching Kummakivi requires a journey through the lush Finnish wilderness, where towering pine trees and moss-covered ground create a tranquil setting.

As visitors approach, the anticipation builds until the rock comes into view, a colossal boulder delicately perched on its narrow base. The contrast between the weathered surface of the rock and the smooth bedrock beneath it is striking, and the sight inspires both awe and curiosity.

Though geologists have unraveled the origins of Kummakivi, understanding its formation does little to diminish the sense of wonder it evokes. The site remains a powerful symbol of nature's artistry, offering a space for reflection and connection with the natural world.

Whether admired for its scientific significance, its folklore, or its serene surroundings, Kummakivi continues to captivate all who encounter it, serving as a reminder of the enduring mysteries that...

It was much bigger than I thought! A recommended detour for geology and nature lovers. Other people might not get much out of it.

The rock was a short walk of less than a kilometer from the parking spot. We did not know that there were two separate parkings for this beforehand, and parked on the eastern one, while the signs at that parking spot recommended to park on the western parking spot for better views during the short trek. The walk itself was still beautiful and was pretty easy to walk, not difficult terrain but not wheelchair friendly. Theres also a lot of information about the rock on site.

Though it is simply a rock balancing on another rock, its definitely exceptional and worth a quick detour if you...

Hike to the Stones – A Recommendation

The hike to the stones is highly recommended. The path leading there takes you through a beautiful, peaceful landscape – scenic, calm, and full of small wonders along the way. Gentle hills, old trees, and the soft rustling of the wind accompany you with every step.

The atmosphere becomes truly special once you reach the stones – a place full of strength and stillness. It invites you to pause, take in the surroundings, and simply breathe. This route is not only visually stunning but also soothing...

long drive way deep in the woods of Finland, couple of final hilly and rough miles on dirt and gravel road. Not much crowd at the parking place, nice and peacefully quiet. About half an hour easy silent hike across the forest and holy cow..., just they there are! The two stones sitting on each other..., astonishing! Actually, by taking a closer look, there are some fist size stones also stuck in between them firmly, to support the balance. Must see with your own eyes, worth the efforts and the long ride!
