Porttilouhi — Attraction in Joensuu sub-region

Omg what a place! Why is this not more famous? I've lived in Finland for 18 years and travelled all around the country, but never heard of it! Easily in my top 5 most impressive places I've been here. We went on a Monday and didn't see another soul the entire time we were there. Got a bit lost first because we followed the navigator but eventually found the easiest route which was part of the UKK route and started by one of the wilderness huts. A beautiful and fairly easy walk through a forest takes you to a grilling spot and there's a steep path down into the gorge from there. BE CAREFUL if like us, you're travelling with a dog. The path in places is right next to the edge of a straight drop into the gorge. My heart was in my mouth towards the end because our dog is insane and pulls in all directions. Once you get down into the gorge though it's absolutely breathtaking. Like being in another world! Everything is so green and lush and the stream that flows the whole length of it makes an eerie echoey noise as it flows under the big boulders. An absolute MUST visit if you're interested in nature or even mythology and witchcraft. There's a lot of stories about the place online which make for interesting reading...
