I'm sure all the good intension are in place and I would easily reward that with five or more stars. The volunteers are super friendly and doing much more than what can be expected from unpaid work, however the renovations are strangely directed towards something that doesn't seem to suit the original style and grandeur of the place. I was slightly disappointed when I left and felt bad about not being excited about the results of the huge effort and energy put into the restoration by this altruistic group of people dedicating their spare time to save the castle from obscurity. Alphonse was a self-taught architect responsible for the restoration, embellishment, and extensive classical style facade with a dream to create the Versaille of ghe Charante. It is very interesting and believed to be the 'newest' chateau in France. They died penniless and left the property to their secretary, who had to auction everything off to pay the debts. Now owned by Volta since 2011 and restoration in progress again. It's definitely worth a visit, and there is a lovely rose garden with the biggest wisteria...

We visited in 2016 and returned to see how they are progressing. If your French is not good there is an English guide, Josephine who is very informative and will make sure you have an enjoyable visit.
Our party had a lady in a wheelchair and there were only 2 bedrooms she couldn't access but was giving information to read whilst we visited them.
The chateau is still very much a work in progress and still being lovingly brought back to life.
