I'm sure all the good intension are in place and I would easily reward that with five or more stars. The volunteers are super friendly and doing much more than what can be expected from unpaid work, however the renovations are strangely directed towards something that doesn't seem to suit the original style and grandeur of the place. I was slightly disappointed when I left and felt bad about not being excited about the results of the huge effort and energy put into the restoration by this altruistic group of people dedicating their spare time to save the castle from obscurity. Sorry guys but my expectations weren't met. That doesn't mean you should feel despondent; it only means that I had set my expectations too high. Good luck. There's still a lot of...

Longest château in France. Original house bought by 'brothers' Raymond & Alphonse Reythorè. Raymond had aspirations in politics and spoke a number of languages. Alphonse was a self-taught architect responsible for the restoration, embellishment, and extensive classical style facade with a dream to create the Versaille of ghe Charante. It is very interesting and believed to be the 'newest' chateau in France. They died penniless and left the property to their secretary, who had to auction everything off to pay the debts. Now owned by Volta since 2011 and restoration in progress again. It's definitely worth a visit, and there is a lovely rose garden with the biggest wisteria...

Beautiful chateau saved by the local Marie and an army of volunteers.

We visited in 2016 and returned to see how they are progressing. If your French is not good there is an English guide, Josephine who is very informative and will make sure you have an enjoyable visit.

Our party had a lady in a wheelchair and there were only 2 bedrooms she couldn't access but was giving information to read whilst we visited them.

The chateau is still very much a work in progress and still being lovingly brought back to life.

I highly recommend a visit but suggest you take your own...

Really incredible Chateau that was purchased by two brothers who decided to turn it into a replica of Versailles. Sadly, they run out of money, and it has been left to volunteers to continue the brothers' dream. They have done quite an astonishing job, as you can see from the photos. The spaces are enormous, and it is quite an incredible achievement to have recreated the various rooms, especially the bedrooms, where there's an enormous amount of bespoke joinery. Fabulous views all round and really friendly and engaging staff. Great visit.

My second visit. When first visiting four years ago it was obvious the chateau was a work in progress, hence my visit this year. A very interesting place but despite it's title "Chateau de la Mercerie" it began life as a simple farmhouse that began a transformation in the late 1920s. Don't let this put you off, it's most definitely worth a visit.
