Read morePeople come to Annecy for the beauty of the lake and its green hillside scenery. It is a 14km long body of water, never wider than 3.5km. As one walks around the lake or along a mere section of it, one is always presented with a double vista: (i) a close-quarters view complete with flourishing greenery and crystal-clear water where sailing boats and colourful kayaks are unfailingly in action. (ii) a distant view of the other side of the lake where meandering roads reach up to tiny hamlets perched partly-hidden on the mountain sides. One can trek around the whole 32km perimeter of the lake in about 10 hours of non-stop walking, obviously more if one stops along the way to take in the ambience of the rural towns and villages that dot the lakeside. If the amount of time is limited, it is wise to concentrate on that section of the lakeside bordering Annecy. The Jardins de l’Europe, right behind Annecy’s Hotel de Ville consists of a pleasant landscape of trees and turf cut across by several intersecting walkways ideal for strolling around. Bordered by the Canal du Vasse from the north and the River Thiou from the south, it is the throbbing heart of Annecy’s lakefront. From here, the charming aptly-named Pont des Amours leads to the huge landscape park of the Champs de Mars, a more out-of-the-way green area, secluded in places but dedicated to the renting of canoes, pedalos and sailing boats at the lakeside embankment. Walking south from the Jardins de l’Europe over Pont de la Halle, you’ll find yourself in an extensive area given over to water sports. Called the Esplanade des Marquisats, it embraces a swimming pool complex, a skiing school, several tennis courts and a bowling centre. The adjacent picturesque lakeside promenade which leads to the village of Sevrier 5km away is Annecy’s most...
