Pontigny Abbey — Attraction in Auxerre

I don't really understand all the positive reviews. The abbey building is a big and impressive space, but offers no clues to its history. There's a central area set up with seats, etc., in the style of a regular church but you can go and see one of those without paying €5.

It doesn't help that while we visited some people were setting up lights for some kind of event. It's hard to embrace the grandeur when people are walking around with ladders.

You can see into, and nothing more, the lay brothers area, but that's the only other building that's accessible. The gardens are basically grass and weeds, though the plan is to get them landscaped at some time in the future.

L'enorme navata della grande abbazia cistercense di Pontigny è incastonata nella valle del Serein, a nord di Auxerre. La magnifica chiesa è ciò che resta di una delle più antiche abbazie cistercensi, fondata nel 1114 dall'abbazia madre di Cîteaux, di cui è la seconda figlia. A differenza della maggior parte delle chiese dell'ordine nascente, quella dell'abbazia di Pontigny è interamente conservata ed è oggi la più grande chiesa cistercense di Francia. Lungo oltre cento metri, l'edificio mostra la semplicità caratteristica dell'arte cistercense. L'intero edificio risale al XII secolo, ma si possono distinguere chiaramente due campagne di costruzione. Le parti più antiche sono romaniche e risalgono al 1140-1150 circa. Di fronte all'ampia facciata con torretta laterale, al termine del viale d'ingresso, si trova il portico o nartece, uno dei pochi esempi conservati di arte cistercense. Questa ricca costruzione testimonia la prosperità dell'abbazia durante il XII e il XIII secolo, quando accolse tre celebri vescovi di Canterbury (Inghilterra), tra cui Sant'Edmondo , venerato nella chiesa. Tuttavia, l'abbazia iniziò il suo declino e fu saccheggiata durante le guerre di religione. Durante la Rivoluzione, l'abbazia fu abolita, i suoi edifici furono in gran parte venduti e distrutti e la chiesa abbaziale, risparmiata, divenne chiesa parrocchiale. This historical abbey has a strong gothic atmosphere. Beside the building there is small cemetery. The setting of trees in rows in front of it looks very beautiful especially when fall. I love this place to visit, so calm and very deep in historical, gothic atmosphere, looks a little spooky...
