Very beautiful castle with a lot of history. The family who still lives here are descendants from the same people who have been living here for 1000 years! Over the centuries, this family has been very important in French history.
The castle itself is only accessible through guided tour, but the surrounding grounds are accessible all day long. The tour is French spoken only, but they have documents in other languages showing an explanation of most of the text. In the tour, the rich history of this family is explained in detail. Our guide could also speak English, so while she held the tour in French, we could still ask her some questions in English (I'm not sure if this is true for all guides, though).
It is very interesting to be in the same rooms as that the family uses. For example, the dining room that is included in the tour, is still being used as a dining room by the family. There are also some very interesting artifacts, such as a piano that has been played by Chopin himself!
The surrounding grounds are also very beautiful. We had a nice walk in the forest after the tour. There are a few available routes, and along the routes there are signs explaining some interesting facts about the structures and plants on display.
All in all, an exceptional experience. I can really recommend a visit. Just make sure you are aware of the tour times when you plan your visit, there are only a few...
Read moreA real hidden gem. You round a bend in the road just outside the village of Chastellux and all of a sudden, there it is, like having stumbled upon Beauxbatons from the Harry Potter stories concealed in the French countryside. Tours run three times a day from July to September and last for an hour. The guide, Marie (very kind and helpful, spoke English well), is full of knowledge and enthusiasm for the history of the site and the Chastellux family who have lived there for 1000(!) years and played an important role in French (and American) history. Well worth a visit if you are in the Morvan area...
Read morePoor presentation: no English. 4 out of 10 of visitors were English speaking and the presenter didn't speak a word of English. We expected at least a summary in English. Not much to see:Very few rooms are open for visit with poor lighting you could hardly see the paintings and portraits. Unfriendly attitude:Taking photos from inside is forbidden. This makes sense but this was nowhere written or warned. One of the visitors wanted to make a photo and the presenter shouted no no! Hope they can improve their...
