visited this absolutely beautiful and poignant location for the first time this summer. I had visited many interesting sites, memories and cemeteries on my 5 day trip but this was my absolute highlight. I arrived late afternoon but well in time to enjoy a very delicious baguette, carrot cake and much needed mug of tea from the cafe. All perfect! I then wandered around the small exhibition which was very thought provoking and bought a couple of items from the shop. The memorial itself just takes your breath away and really makes you appreciate just how lucky we all are today! All those names 😢❤️ The "Standing Giants" of course added another element to the whole experience and made it feel all the more emotional. Just reading the personal messages on the plaques brought me to tears. And the backdrop for the memorial and silhouettes over the coast...leaves you speechless really. It was quite busy when I arrived at 3.30 but around 6.30 pm it had quietened and as the sun lowered the atmosphere in the whole area felt very different...more beautiful even. An unforgettable visit. An absolute 100% recommendation from me and I defintely hope to visit again in the future. We will...
Read moreVery fitting tribute to the brave men of the D Day landings and the French soldiers and people who also took part in this epic time of history... Not forgetting the allies who also took part.. America... Canada... Polish.. and many more.. Parking is charged at €3..a day.. this cost goes to the upkeep of the memorial.. A toilet block is located to the side of the car park... As you walk to the memorial there is a small tent with a young lady who was selling souvenirs and is able to help with any questions you may have... I also noticed that a small vehicle was transporting people with mobility issues to the memorial and back... Ideal for those who need help... By the way it is only a short walk from the car park to the memorial and flat... so wheel chair access is available The memorial is a beautiful place and overlooking Gold beach. Walking towards the memorial... there are large pillars of concrete with inscriptions depicting the D Day landings. one side in English and the other side is French The memorial also contains a French memorial to honour the French...
Read moreA stunning memorial for the British members of the services who died liberating and bringing freedom to Normandy in World War Two, took long enough to get a decent memorial mind!
It is well done, pure class and a beautiful location overlooking the beaches they stormed on 6th June 1944. It's a must visit for anyone visiting Normandy, whether you're there seeing the remnants of the battle long ago and the museums or just there on holiday or just passing through.
Unfortunately i do have a couple of gripes..... (1) we have two priministers mentioned in the stonework, the great Winston Churchill and Teresa May.... (2) and this is a sign its British, you have to pay €3 to park... for this i nearly gave it four stars, but that would diminish what it stands for and it is superb, but in our week in Normandy we didn't have to pay for any parking... only here, it states its to pay for the up keep.... the American cemetery was free and that is constantly maintained by a dozen plus people, might only be €3 but...
