Château Maucoil — Attraction in Carpentras

Wow! I booked onto a fabulous cooking class and wine tasting experience with my family and it was the most special of days. We learned the chateau is under new ownership since 2022 and everyone we met, from the extremely knowledgeable wine experts to a chef quite like no other, was extremely accommodating. The process of making the wine is like nothing I’ve seen previously - completely environmentally friendly and biodynamic - with the end product being just delightful. The cooking class was fantastic, using fresh produce from the garden and I learned so much. Jean-Claude makes cooking for 10 people seem so effortless and is a very entertaining character. I paired ingredients that I never thought would work so well together and we couldn’t stop eating. It was a bad wine tasting experience, as it’s more of a wine store than a wine tasting place. You get to taste the wines, but there’s no explanation about wineyard, the history of the chateau (which a shame, as the chateau makes wine since the 1600s!!!), no explanation about the grapes, the fermentation process, nothing.

Once you arrive you are asked which wines you want to try (and it’s very hard to answer this question if you didn’t have any introduction about the wines). You drink them and it’s over in 15 minutes.

Really a pity, because the place is gorgeous and has a huge commercial potential.

We visited the Chateau at Easter 2025 with three generations of our family and had a wonderful time. The reception we received was very warm and the tour was interesting and very informative. Everyone spoke excellent English which was a huge bonus for us. We enjoyed a wine tasting with a selection of delicious wines and then a superb lunch with local cuisine. The chef came out to greet us and explained the inspiration for dishes and where he sourced ingredients which was lovely but not intrusive at all. We finished off our trip with a donkey walk around the vines - the scenery is spectacular and the walk perfectly finished an excellent experience. We would highly recommend a visit to...
