I visited all the batteries in Normandy during my D-day tour. And I must admit that this was the best one. On first sight you don't think this battery is great because they don't display a lot of guns. But the underground tranches and the audio information was just great. Most of the times I don't like these audio informations tours. This because they always give you information that you already know.

But not here. They explain the beginning of the bunker and the battle. They do this in your own languages so you can understand everything. The details they tell you are amazing. The part a liked the most was the story about the battle near the bunker and the effect that the battery had on d-day. The tickets were not expensive and the parking is free. This is a must see for people that come to Normandy...

The tour takes about 1 hour. You receive an audioguide an walk through the site on your own. The site barely has anything apart from empty bunkers and tunnels. I expected something more, especially for the price of 7E. It would be far more entertaining if they put there some mannequins and some equipment of the troops that had been deployed here, but it is not the case. There are a lot of WW2-related sites in Normandy (many of them are free to visit) - if you do not have an excess of time, I recommend to...

Despite frequent bombings in the spring of 1944 and a heavy bombardment on the night before the Allied landings, the guns were operational. In the night of 5 to 6 June 1944 the battery Azeville was attacked by U.S. paratroopers. but because of some fierce fighting, the Americans were forced to retreat. The battery of Azeville was heavily defended by the Germans. It forced the Americans to use a different side to attack. After heavy fighting German garrison surrendered on the 9th of June.

There are two parts of this defence complex that can be seen without charge. It is worth paying to get access to the rest of it. You get a speaker device that plays prerecorded information when you reach certain points. Simple to use, number on the wall, press the same number and play on the speaker device. It was interesting to see some of the impact damage done to the emplacements, some from battleships firing 12". Stopped here when going from Omaha to Idaho. Glad we did.
