We went today on a Battlefield tour. The experience was really good it was amazing to see the defences but at the same time the emotion of knowing that our allied troops were desperate to get off the beaches the Battery was Originally French 100 years before WWII used as the French and British HQs as the allies retreated along the beach....After operation Dynamo the bunker was strengthened by the German's and used as part of the Atlantic Sea Wall... it is a walk from the carpark but well well worth it.... a must see if on a Retreat from Dunkirk WWII Tour... Lots of overgrowth after all this time can be dangerous in places as steep drops and entrances hidden by the plants.
Amazing that the concrete is still in tact, amazing feats of engineering. Wish there were some photos of how it looked before being partly demolished.
Well worth a visit. When the tide is out you can also see the lower hull remains of some of the ships that were destroyed during the evacuation of Dunkirk. Looking at the area now, a nature reserve in all its beauty it is difficult to imagine the horror scenes that were there during...
Read moreThis site is somewhat difficult to get too and not well mentioned in most tour books however it is an incredibly extensive fortification that covers several hundred years of the area's history the combination of Atlantic Wall fortifications and previous fortifications protecting the city of Dunkirk and the canal that gets entrance into the center of town is very imposing the artwork in graffiti done on it over the years well somewhat distressing is also somewhat impressive for a site that is sitting rather by itself along or otherwise...
