The Museum Dunkerque 1940 Operation Dynamo is an absolutely fantastic museum that provides a comprehensive and moving tribute to one of the most important events in modern history. The museum is beautifully designed and laid out, with a wealth of information and artifacts that bring the events of Operation Dynamo to life in a powerful and emotional way.
The exhibits are expertly curated and presented, with a focus on telling the stories of the soldiers, sailors, and civilians who lived through this incredible event. From the personal stories of the soldiers on the front lines to the strategic decisions made by the military leaders, every aspect of Operation Dynamo is explored in detail.
The museum is also home to a number of fascinating artifacts, including weapons, uniforms, and even some of the actual vehicles used during the evacuation. These artifacts help to bring the history of Operation Dynamo to life in a tangible and visceral way, giving visitors a real sense of what it was like to be there.
Overall, I would highly recommend the War Museum Dunkirk 1940 Operation Dynamo to anyone with an interest in history, military strategy, or simply the human experience. The museum near the shore where 338.000 soldiers have been evacuated in ten days in May- June 1940 is harbored in the old 1870 barracks of the French Infantry brigade. Some 5000 soldiers perished on allied side.
This small museum is worthwhile with an impressive film documentary composed enterely on historic footage, with a duration of abt. 12 minutes, which is shown consecutively in French and English versions. Furthermore vehicles and materials are in the exhibition. There is no proper restaurant but there is a nice shop with a variety of souvenirs: T-sirts, pins, mugs, graphic novels and books.
The story is told with historic accuracy, pointing out the weaknesses and strenghts of thge four armies concerned, and with attention to the fate of the citizens. Even if the weather during our vesting day was not realy friendly in nature, some hundred visitors showed up in less than two hours, originating from different nations like Belgium, France, the United Kingdom, Denemarken etcetera.
In the town of Dunkerque, an interesting itinerary with some 35 historic pictures and explanations is helping the visitor to go down Memory Lane and to understand ever better European War History and European long...
Read moreThe Museum was a wonderful exhibition that really did dive deep into the facts and history around the Wartime Dunkirk and the British Evacuation of the port.
It dived heavily into the facts and used artifacts that were original to the time period and even those recovered from the surrounding area itself.
The price of the museum is really reasonable at €8 per adult and again offering discounted entry for Veterans and Current Serving members of the Armed Forces.
My only gripe and the biggest flaw of the museum is that it is alot of reading and alot of boards with paragraph amongst paragraphs of text and I feel this will disconnect younger audiences like children or young teenagers from really connecting to the history and appreciating why it is significant.
I personally feel some more interactive displays or Video Displays around the museum would be beneficial to really draw the interest for younger targeted audiences.
However, my overall experience with the museum was very enjoyable with friendly staff that were happy to help even with the language difference. I would highly recommend to anyone want to know more about The port of Dunkirk but also wanting to learn more about the British Influence...
