A truly unforgettable experience!! If you're near Les Ecrins National Park, you must visit. We did a family hike (twin 8 year olds) in August 2020 and it was exceptional.
To hike to this Alpine Lake, first drive all the way up to the Chalet-Hotel du Gioberney at the end of the D480 - the drive up alone is beautiful, passing many picturesque picnic spots and several waterfalls. Park in the free parking lot (which can get very busy) and head to the trail. We couldn't find much information in English or maps of the trail but there are 2 small signs pointing the way; we made sure to keep asking people who were coming back down if it was the right way :) This hike is a loop, so you can take the left or the right fork - but once you're on the trail you can't really go wrong. We opted to hike both up and down the left route which is apparently a little less difficult. We wore trainers and didn't have any walking sticks, but were sure to take plenty of water and snacks. The signs will tell you that it takes 1 hour 15 minutes, but we found that it took closer to 1 hour 45 minutes because we stopped along the way and there are some parts that are quite tricky/rocky/steep. But once you reach the top, it opens out to a gorgeous meadow with a stream running through it, and a small waterfall. Keep walking past the waterfall and you finally come to the Lake. On a clear day, it is absolutely stunning and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to swim in it! There were maybe 10 other people there when we arrived at around 4pm. We stayed for an hour before we took the same left route back down to the bottom, arriving just after 6pm. We stopped at the Chalet-Hotel but they only take cash which we didn't have, so we drove a little further down La Chapelle en Valgaudemar for a quick snack.
We were camping near Gap, so it took us about an hour to drive up. However, there are many basic camping sites along the D480 that don't...
