Domaine de l'abbé Saunière — Attraction in Limoux

The Domaine de l'abbé Saunière is very much worth the visit if you find yourself touring the Aude départment in southern France and are near Rennes-le-Chateau. As displays and placards in the small museum tell you, there are many legends associated with this area, including a story that the body of Christ was brought to the Corbières mountains and that Mary Magdalene came there and spent her final years in the Corbières. These legends have been further elaborated because this part of France is where the Cathars flourished, and stories about the Cathars have gotten interwoven with ones about the Templars.

Reviewing the town generally. We didn't bother with the museum as you can see the church for free which is the main thing of interest. No one is allowed in the graveyard. The views from the village are spectacular. Worth a trip even without the conspiracy theories! We paid the €2 to park a little closer to the town. It's probably about half way between the town and the lower car park so not an amazing difference but probably worth a couple of Euros. We ate in the Jardin restaurant just next to the museum which was expensive and to be honest the sparrows were a nuisance and shat on our table about 4 times before we moved inside to escape them. Didn't feel that lucky...

Domaine de l’abbè Saunière è costituito da una chiesa, da villa Bethania dimora di Saunière, una torre sulla collina – una libreria personale chiamata 'Torre Magdala', da un bel giardino dove si trova la tomba del parroco e da un cimitero (quasi mai aperto). Il tutto si trova a Rennes-le-Château, un piccolo paesino vicino a Couiza, luogo che richiama molti turisti appunto per visitare la “figura” centrale di molte delle teorie cospirative riguardanti Rennes-le-Château. Molti elementi di queste teorie sono stati ripresi successivamente da Dan Brown nel suo best seller del 2003 Il codice da Vinci. Arrivati all’inizio del paese si deve parcheggiare in un parcheggio a pagamento e da qui a piedi attraversando le viuzze del paese si arriva fino all’entrata della chiesa. La chiesa è visitabile gratuitamente mentre tutto il resto è a pagamento, una volta entrati nella villa inizia un tour, addentrandosi nella vita di Saunière con innumerevoli foto, documenti, stanze, libreria, giardino ben curato per arrivare infine a visitare la famosa 'Torre Magdala'. Un suggestivo viaggio alla scoperta del “Santo Graal”. Finito il giro turistico si ritorna in reception dove si trova un piccolo negozio per comprare eventuali cadeaux. In paese vi sono 2 o tre ristoranti, noi invece abbiamo pranzato in quello più vicino alla chiesa dove è possibile magiare sia sotto agli alberi che al chiuso del ristorante. Qui si mangia molto bene anche carne alla brace cotta al momento sul camino a legna e vi è una vista panoramica sulla valle spettacolare. Tutto il personale in villa e al ristorante è molto cordiale e disponibile. Ovviamente consiglio tutto quanto sopra descritto soprattutto a coloro appassionati di Saunière, crociati e mitologia del...
