Spent a lovely afternoon wandering round the gardens and open areas of the Chateau. There is a guided tour of the main Château in a Thursday that you need to book, but we just did the self guided tour which was lovely. There is guide you can download that tells you everything you need, and although the film on Barrel manufacture is in French (as it should be in France )it has a charm the means it really doesn’t matter if you speak the language or not.
What is really nice is, although there is significant history associated with the Chateau it is very clearly a working vineyard, and a good one at that.
There was a clear passion in everything they do around the wine, and the ones we tasted were excellent. Especially the Rosé, which was a delicious surprise. We came away with a couple of cases!
At €6 for the tour with the wine tasting at the end this well...
Read moreChâteau de Nitray was the best gem we could've stumbled upon. We were looking for vineyards along our route North, and I found this place and saw the photos and instantly I wanted to be there. The place looks exactly like the photos. The gentleman who greeted us and guided us through the tasting was so personable and nice. I was surprised that the family lives in the castle, what a life! It gives the place a warm spirit. The wines we tasted were Brut, Sauvignon, Cabernet (Les Meilleures), and Côt. There's also a sweet wine called Chenin that's super tasty. The prices were extremely reasonable, I left with 6 bottles (as many as I can bring back to the States) and 2 souvenirs, all for a bit less than 50€.
I would absolutely come here again. There's really nothing not to like.
P.S. I secretly picked a tiny pear from the big tree in the garden. It, too,...
Read moreA very unusual wine tasting in more ways than one. First, a prepaid €5 self conducted tour of the buildings. Not a lengthy process as it is quite compact and the manager gave us written guides which we returned at conclusion of the tour. The resident family was having a Sunday lunch get together in the open courtyard and having a good time. We were set up with glasses at an adjacent table and picked 5 wines to taste. After the first, our host left the remaining 4 bottles for us to taste at our leisure. Wines were quite inexpensive except the magnum of red at €20 and our favorite of the group. Others were €5 to €7 a bottle so very affordable. Worth a visit in the area but...
