Beautiful castle, that's still lived in. Not allowed to photograph (which was okay). But one pet peeve about French tourist attractions is the lack of English explanations. You're guided through the castle, which is great. The guide talked a lot but never translated anything in English (while he could speak English). We got a list of stuff we could see, but it only said: chest, XVIth century. The guide obviously explained much, much more about it. So all this was wasted on us, which was a real pity. It doesn't have to be long, but just a little effort to try would make it much better. While I understand that not all castles can have guided tours by tablet like Chateau Guillaume-le-Conquérant in Falaise, even a longer handout would improve it or take the time...

Guided tours starts 2pm, beware it is only in French but if you are an English speaker, you'll be given a very good leaflet that pretty much gives you the information that the guide tells in French, also, very considerately, I was encouraged to ask any questions in English if there was anything I wanted to know.
The castle has a long and fascinating history, and it is very well preserved. 4 rooms indoors are open to public, all of them filled with beautiful items, some of them dating back as far as 15th century. 7 euros entrance fee for an adult, I consider...
Read moreIt's some time since we went on a guided tour of the Chateau at Lassay. One of three châteaux in the village, this is the only one occupied. The tour is a great way to spend a couple of hours and the talk inside well worth listening to. It is in French so be aware. There is a fantastic history as you would expect but the time around the 2nd World War is a surprise. I won't spoil your visit by telling you. A walk around the lake and some narrow covered streets near the chateau is also worthwhile, remember to look out for the information plaques and local architecture. A bell shaped slate roof, flat arches over garage doorways and carving...
