Lors de la conception du projet, les ingénieurs doivent composer avec diverses contraintes techniques : le pont doit par exemple être assez haut pour permettre la navigation des navires remontant la Seine jusqu’à Rouen (y compris les trois-mâts !) ou Paris (bateaux fluviaux uniquement), et doit résister à des vents soufflant régulièrement à plus de 130 km/h. Enfin, le lit du fleuve n’offre pas de stabilité naturelle pour un ancrage solide. Malgré ces difficultés, les travaux ne vont durer que sept ans. Les pylônes de 214 m de hauteur (la taille de la Tour Montparnasse !) dominent l’estuaire. Leurs fondations s’enfoncent à plus de 50 m sous le lit de la Seine. Ils sont séparés par une portée centrale de 856 m. Les 184 haubans dessinent une silhouette élégante et photogénique. Pour relier une rive à l’autre, vous parcourez plus de 2 km suspendus au-dessus de l’eau.

Près de 20 millions de véhicules passent le péage chaque année. Même si l’une des raisons d’être du Pont de Normandie est la desserte du port industriel du Havre, une voie piétonne permet aux plus courageux de le traverser en savourant le paysage. Comptez 2 heures de balade pour faire l’aller-retour à pied. La traversée du Pont de Normandie à vélo est possible, mais pas recommandée, du fait de la proximité avec les voitures, et de la largeur étroite de la bande cyclable. This long bridge [spanning the Seine River as it approaches the "English Channel"/la Manche- and the parts leading up to, and from it-- is an "engineering marvel"!! It can be seen from the nearby town of Honfluer and environs, as well as the much bigger city [on the other side of the Seine] of "le Havre". The views of the surrounding countryside as well as the Seine are "quite dramatic"! For travellers heading to and from the Northern Beaches by car or bus {i.e. the Northern Riviera} it facilitates such travels. The fees for using the bridge and approaches are very affordable.
