Not a theme park, a journey back in time”
A very pleasant day can be spent here - we have visited several times and enjoyed it each time.
TIP 1 Find out the times of the little train that takes you there, otherwise you'll be waiting at the station with nothing to do (there is no road access)
TIP 2 Buy the fresh-baked bread made from flour milled on the premises - gorgeous!
TIP 3 Very young children will be bored and fractious - it's not a theme park, there are no rides or slides. Ages 7 and above.
TIP 4 take bottles of water and hats in the summer months - it can get very hot moving round.
How many years have we been coming here? Too many to count!
But the fact that we keep coming back tells you something very important: it's worth it.
From catching the little olde-worlde train to get here, to peering inside the old houses and farm buildings, to walking around the lovely grounds and to learning (re-learning!) so much about life in the past, it's a great experience.
Not for the toddler age group, but even teens will find something of interest.

Read moreLocated in Sabres in the heart of the déparment Landes, this open-air museum was opened in 1970 and was among the first of these types of museums in France. Its aim is to conserve, study and transmit the heritage of the Grande Lande by recreating the life of its inhabitants in the 19th century. A recreated and safeguarded heritage site, the Ecomusée displays the everyday life of farmers and herders that lived in and cultivated the area some 150 years ago. Many of the unique buildings in this museum were transferred from the surrounding area, recreating a typical settlement in the Landes in the 19th century. The museum itself is very extensive and designed with attention to details. Apart from tours, visitors can also take part in workshops and daily events. I have visited the Écomusée several times over the past years and absolutely enjoyed it! The train ride to and from the museum is especially nice. The prices are acceptable given the time one can spend in the museum and the amount of things to see and discover. Be sure to arrive before noon so you have enough time to discover...
Read moreA good place to see, how people lived in ancient rural times. I visited it on weekday in September. Unfortunately almost all attration where no presentations. Which was a bit sad. Maybe ask before, when you want to see more lifelike thing. The houses are ooen and luckly the animals where there😏. Also, when you to eat there, come in the morning. In September entrance is closed from 12-13:40 o'clock. So in Afternoon Restaurant is already closed! It is a quiete big area. I spend 4 hours. There is also free guided tour, but in french. Luckly all decriptions are in different languages. This helps a lot. The small train driver -4km- is nice in old shaking waggons. But speed is slow, no worries🚂. The fee was 15€, which is fair for the size of...
