This is the single most touching, poignant place I have ever been; the scale of loss from World War 1 hits you the moment you reach the end of the entrance path and get a first glimpse of the graves of 10,000+ people who are laid to rest there.
The cemetery is maintained impeccably and after spending just an hour or so there, is something I know my daughter and I will never forget. A very sad place, but if only everyone could see it, maybe the sacrifice of the soldiers who lie there would be all the more worthwhile, as I defy anyone to go to war after looking across...
Read moreEtaples Military Cemetery is the largest CWGC cemetery in France. It is located near Boulogne on the former site of a large military hospital complex used by the Allies during the First World War.
The view here it is stunning, so many different regiments from various commonwealth countries all honoured together.
Included is a section of German graves, Chinese graves and a large amount of Commonwealth graves.
I brought a group here and several of the students presented projects for soldiers and nurses that they researched.

If you ever want to teach your children the sheer, stupid futility of war, bring them here. You won't need to speak about it to them. You probably won't be able to. So quiet, so neat, not a blade of grass out of place. So many gave their lives....
