Château de Gacé — Attraction in Mortagne-au-Perche

Plenty of space to park up for the night, though there is a certain irony in the fact that motorhomes are only allowed to park from 1700 - 1000, the bourne requires tokens that are available from the town hall, and the town halls' opening hours are from 1000 - 1700. The bourne is outside the parking by the side of the road, which may be a problem for the larger vehicle. The parking is a bit slopey and there is some traffic noise, though not too bad. Le seigneur Raoul de Gacé, tuteur de Guillaume le Conquérant a construit et occupé le 1er château au 11ème siècle. L'ouvrage est transformé vers 1460 par l'ajout d'une tour ronde défendue par des mâchicoulis, puis en 1490 par la construction d'un chatelet constitué de 2 tours et d'une poterne. Au 17ème siècle, on y ajoute le corps de bâtiment central appareillé tout en briques. C'est aussi à Gacé qu'aboutit la route d'Alphonsine Plessis à l'âge de 14 ans en 1838, où elle est placée par son père comme apprentie dans un atelier. Connue sous le surnom de "Dame aux Camélias", elle se rend dans la capitale où elle fréquente le "tout-Paris" comme courtisane. Elle décéde à seulement 24 ans en 1847. Sur la place du Château, des panneaux reviennent sur cette dramatique histoire et proposent de suivre le parcours de la "Dame aux Camélias " autour de Gacé. Sur la place de la mairie, halle en béton armé de style Art Nouveau. Un superbe château et une histoire romanesque pour ce petit coin de Normandie...
