Cerdon caves - Prehistoric Amusement Park — Attraction in Nantua

As an accompanying primary school teacher from the bilingual Greenfield school in Lyon (Collonges) I can only say an enormous "THANK YOU" to our guide Pierre. He not only provided an excellent commentary on the caves — in English — with our group of 18 children, but he also provided a fantastic experience for the fire-making and music activities that followed.

The picnic facility for our group (a large humanitarian-styled tent) was also well prepared, clean, and appreciated; especially as there was some light rain falling.

The sight is especially well-equipped with a modern and clean toilet facility.

Overall, our experience was 5 stars. The team was young, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable. We had the feeling to have visited an English-speaking country for the day, which was the aim of our outing.

We’ll definitely be back with other CE2/CM1/CM2 groups...

Lieux très interessant tant dans le fond que la forme…

Pour le fond, grosso modo, c’est une grotte à « la verticale », formé dans une montagne. Pour la forme, c’est là que ça devient intéressant…. Quand on arrive, nous prenons nos tickets, puis nous devons nous rendre à l’entrée de la grotte. Celle ci est situe bien plus haut que la billetterie. On prend un petit sentier très bien entretenu, avec beaucoup (vraiment) d’escaliers… On arrive ensuite sur un plateau sur lequel se trouve un petit snack, et différents lieux avec des animations pour enfants. On continue encore, et nous arrivons à l’entrée de la grotte. Il y a un digicode présent sur le tickets d’entrée pour entrer.

La visite est ensuite une longue descente d’escaliers (tout ce que l’on a monté). Il y a un audio guide à charger sur une page internet sur smartphone (bien charger l’audio avant, et ne pas couper la page internet pour ne pas tout perdre !!). Au bout d’un moment, nous arrivons au niveau du gouffre (voir photos), et là, deux choix. Soit on sort et direction la buvette. Soit on continue de descendre pour accéder à un point de vue en contrebas. Mais à savoir, c’est un cul de sac, à partir de là, tout ce que l’on descend, on le remonte après !! Mais ça fait le coups d’œil !! Ne serait ce que les variations de températures que l’on se prends en pleine poire… on passe de 11, puis à 4, puis à 34(en juillet) en l’espace de quelques minutes, puis inversement, 34, 4, et 11 puis 34.

Bref, une bien belle visite, à ne pas faire en béquille !! Nous l’avons fait avec une enfant de 18mois en porte bébé, bien emmitouflée (en prenant beaucoup de précaution car les escaliers sont glissants par endroits), et ça se fait très bien !

We took the guided tour of the caves. There is a second part that is unguided. I was pleased with the mineral structures visible and that the caves were overall intact, with minimal signs of human presence. There were even tiny crustaceans or insects visible in some of the cave ponds. Those who frequent caves will find these ones a bit short, and I feel that there is an opportunity in the second half to provide additional educational and historic context through informational panels.
