Château de Quéribus — Attraction in Narbonne

I recently visited the Chateau with my family and 18 month old boy.

The surrounding countryside is very picturesque and the drive to the castle is a very pleasant one. There is ample parking, with mobile toilets located within easy walking distance. At the entry to the site is a small wooden hut where you pay to access the walk, and can also buy information pamphlets on the region. There is no food or drink for sale, which is a shame as there is no local amenities, so I would definitely recommend taking a packed lunch with you, as well as plenty of water.

The walk to the castle, although relatively short, is quite challenging. It is totally unsuitable for prams or buggies, so take small children with you at your own risk.

The site itself is certainly more ruins than castle, and we found the information that was supplied at the site to be inadequate. The views of the surrounding area were breathtaking, but the castle itself did not merit an entry fee or the precarious walk.

This is a great little, historical chateau, with amazing views of the Pyrenees. However, there's not much there and you need to know that before you go.

Its not much of a castle. There's a small keep and a short audio guide that talks about the history, but the view are the reason for the entrance fee.

It's not accessible to wheelchair or pushchair users, the path is steep and the spiral staircase to the keep is dark and could be difficult.

Het Kasteel van Quéribus (Frans: Château de Quéribus) is een deels verwoest, deels gerestaureerd kasteel in het zuiden van Frankrijk. Het kasteel bevindt zich op ruim 700 meter hoogte op een bergtop in het huidige Cucugnan in het departement Aude.

Het kasteel werd in 1020 voor het eerst vermeld. Het behoorde toe aan graafschappen die onderdeel waren van het Spaanse Koninkrijk Aragon.[1] Later was het kasteel een van de zogenaamde "vijf zonen van Carcassonne", samen met de kastelen van Peyrepertuse, Puilaurens, Aguilar en Termes. De vijf kastelen waren de buitenposten van de stad Carcassonne en samen dekten ze een deel van de zuidflank van Frankrijk.

Het kasteel van Quéribus wordt door sommigen beschouwd als de laatste burcht van de katharen. Na de val van Montségur in 1244 moeten een aantal katharen een veilig heenkomen hebben gezocht in een kasteel aan de grens met Spanje en Quéribus zou dat kasteel geweest kunnen zijn. In 1255 zond Frankrijk soldaten naar het zuiden om deze laatste burcht op te sporen en in te nemen, maar de katharen wisten zonder gevecht te ontsnappen. Het kasteel gaf zich na een korte belegering in hetzelfde jaar over aan de Fransen.

Met de Vrede van de Pyreneeën in 1659 kwam de grens tussen Frankrijk en Spanje een stuk zuidelijker te liggen, op de huidige locatie. Daarmee verloren de "zonen van Carcassonne" goeddeels hun belang.

Het kasteel is een monument historique sinds 1907.[1] In 1951 en tussen 1998 en 2002 werden restauratiewerkzaamheden uitgevoerd en sinds 2002 is het kasteel toegankelijk voor het publiek.
