Serre de la Madone — Attraction in Nice

Neben dem berühmten Hidcote Manor in England der zweite Garten von Mr. Johnston. Er ist wahrlich riesig und man kann sich locker 2 h darin aufhalten.

Direkt am Garten gibt es sogar kostenlose Parkplätze (auch für kleine Busse), eine Seltenheit in Frankreich.

Die Anlage ist insgesamt etwas wilder und schattiger als Hidcote, man erkennt aber überall die Handschrift ihres Erschaffers. Kleine, vielfältige Gartenräume wechseln sich ab. Selbst im Februar, wenn noch fast nichts blüht, hat sich der Besuch gelohnt. Große Bereiche sind Schattengarten.

Die Highlight sind natürlich der große Teich vor dem Wintergarten und die wirklich lange Pergola. Sehr interessant ist die eindrucksvolle Sammlung an Mahonien und Berberitzen, die mehrere Wege flankieren und fast alle ein Namensschild tragen.

Leider ist auch hier der Buchsbaum im Absterben begriffen. Die Büsche werden von der Buchsbaumwelke, Rost und dem Zünsler hinweggerafft. An einigen Stellen wurde schon begonnen es mit Lonicera als Ersatz zu probieren. Hoffentlich mit Erfolg.

Wie Hidcote ist der Garten von einer Art Verein geführt. Die Gärtnerinnen sind sehr nett und kämpfen beständig gegen den Wildwuchs. Auch wenn Teile etwas wild geworden sind, halten sie die riesige Anlage ziemlich...

Total waste of time and money. It seems that the garden has not been taken care of for decades, which is really sad because at some point of time it must have been beautiful. The hostess was plain rude to us and hardly spoke English, and 10 euro per ticket is ridiculously overpriced. Even if it was free of charge, I don't think it's something worth spending...
