Cultural center Tjibaou introduces you to a local culture kanak. It is a huge place and you would want to spend there a couple of hours to explore the village. There are 8 separate domes and each of them tells you the history. Last two domes are dedicated to an architecture of the domes. They are quite unique! There is a lot to read and you can use audioguide although some of it only in French. There are few modern exhibitions as well. Outside there are also few things to look. You can take a Kanak path that tells you the story. The writing is in French and English. You can learn about plants, trees, and etc how kanak culture used it for their benefits, for example making some medicine and etc. There are beautiful view to Noumea from it and you can also explore the remnants of kanak culture. I recommend to go to a view point! Beautiful scenery from there. There is a bench where you can sit , catch your breath, and admire New Caledonia . Probably a half day trip. You can pack a lunch and have it there. There are toilet and bathroom facilities, vending machines for snack and drinks. You are given a map on an entrance and some instructions how to explore the village.

This place is absolutely must visit when in Noumea! Located about 20 mins from the city canter you can get here by public bus, taxi or tour guide. Entry costs 1000 XPF for adults and 500 XPF for children and free for kids up to 12, however many hotels offer free admission coupons too. Located between Magenta and Tina bays, the site encompasses an art centre, a museum, performance spaces, a library, a landscaped park and more. Named after the Kanak political leader Jean-Marie Tjibaou - the Tjibaou Cultural Centre was constructed to celebrate the history and culture of the local Kanak people. It’s truly stunning in all aspects, sculptures, exhibitions, plants, views, buildings giving visitors unique taste of local culture, history , diversity and habits. Several main buildings host exhibitions and library, but date you to go outside and see the huts and even walk up the hill for the addition stunning views over the bay and islands are bonus. Souvenir shop and cafe was closed when we visited. It takes around 1.5 -2 hours to truly enjoy the place, so allow enough time to truly experience the place.

Disappointing: insufficient displays offer English translations, considering that this is a premier destination for overseas tourists. The sign offering free internet and translations appeared in one place only, and we only saw it after we had attended every exhibition. The cafe and gift shop were closed (it was Saturday). Also, there wasn’t actually that much info about Kanak traditional life eg food acquisition, production and trade; social and family structures and life; village and inter-tribal politics and customs; history of migration; music, not even in French. Good exhibition of carved wooden poles, and a lovely walk through the gardens with adequate information about spiritual beliefs and practices. Perhaps this place isn’t really intended for foreign visitors after all, but a centre for local traditional owners to gather and practice traditional arts and crafts in workshops and residency projects.

Stunning architectural design. Nice location.

Virtually nothing cultural about the place. History goes back to 1917, the very little they have. It’s basically an art gallery. All the plaques except a few are only in French so you have no idea about the few items of historical interest.

The cafe is a joke. We walked in, the only people there, the staff member didn’t even look up or acknowledge our existence in any way. We stood at the counter for a minute looking at the “offerings” They don’t even have a coffee Machine! A cafe with no coffee Machine...?! What food they offer is microwaved. The lagoon view is a lie. I’ve been to better bus station cafes.

Utterly underwhelmed and disappointed. Glad we didn’t need to pay to enter as we had a voucher from our hotel. Was surprised to find the place so empty when we arrived, however it all became very clear when just 30mins after arriving we were...
