Visiting Thiepval is a moving experience, conjuring up, as it does, the appalling reality of all these dead soldiers lost and unidentified. But the magnificence of the memorial satisfies the urge to honour them appropriately. The peacefulness of the surroundings is a comforting antidote to the racket of war which they experienced. Everyone will know someone with a similar name on the wall of Remembrance, which brings home the sacrifices families made - as mine did with two precious sons and brothers lost. The museum is very interesting and accessible and could easily occupy the day in addition to the monument. There are some films to watch and the Bayeux tapestry style frieze is so complex you could spend ages just looking at that. Between the monument and the museum is a pretty dog friendly cottage serving light meals and snack. We sat outside. overlooking the lawn and trees. You can if you wish buy a double ticket which also covers Peronne. There is a complimentary accompanying booklet which gives very helpful information on all the related sites in the area. At this time of year there were a few school parties around but there is...
Read moreI agree with another review in that if you have the opportunity you must visit Thiepval. An extremely humbling experience especially if you have relatives who have died in the Great War and have their names displayed on the memorial. The monument itself is stunning and a fitting tribute to those who lost their lives. The Visitor Centre is excellent and run by CWGC staff who are really pleasant and polite, and keen to help you when required. I was particularly impressed with one member of staff who was extremely helpful in finding my relatives names on the monument which isn’t as daunting as it may look or sound. You will need the name, rank and regiment and the pier and face number if you are researching your relatives. All Commonwealth War Graves have a register on site which can help, however the CWGC guides have electronic access which is useful. As said, if you have the chance to visit Thiepval, please take it. You will not be...
Read moreEveryone should visit Thiepval. It is an experience of a lifetime. You will be amazed at the scale of the Memorial and the position in which it stands. It is overwhelming when you try and take in the 72000 names of the heroes who fell on Somme between July 1915 and March 1918 who have no known graves. The Visitors Centre is excellent and run by a wonderful group of people who are obviously passionate about their work. It is an excellent exhibition enhanced with an AV theatre and a shop. This is only one part of an experience in an area full of historical sites, monuments and Commonwealth Cemeteries which should be visited. It is also worth visiting the German cemeteries as these men men also made the ultimate sacrifice. Close to Thiepval stands the Ulster Tower in memory of the brave men of the 36th Ulster Division. ...
