This hike is exactly as advertised, it can be a quick 10 minute walk to see a waterfall and cave you can swim in. But there is a hidden hike with a lovely view. We start at the gift shop, which is hard to miss and made our way to the right. Eventually you'll see some steps made of rock where you can make a left. This trail is hard, takes about 30 minutes and it is pretty much a semi-vertical trek up the mountain. There is one rope at the beginning of the climb that gives a nice view. If you handled that well, there are about five more ropes to help you get to the top. This hike, a hidden find, was the highlight of my trip. Read moreBeautiful place to visit for free. You can park your car next to the road and start exploring the area with shallow caves. If you are a bit more adventurous you can take a path through a few concrete steps up to the hill as we did, and you will get on a one kilometer ascent to the top of the hill where you'll have an amazing view of the valley and the coast, and there is a wooden platform and a couple of swings for you to increase your excitement. A short drive from the city center of Papeete, Grottes De Mara’a are really easy to get to - almost no walking is required at all to get to the main grotto. There is a lot of parking but it can fill up, so do keep that in mind. You might just need to be a bit lucky. The caverns are so neat! They have very clear water that is cool to the touch - yes, there are signs that say no swimming, but you can definitely sneak in the water for a few minutes…just make sure not too many people...
