Memorial Museum of the Maginot Line of the Rhine — Attraction in Sélestat-Erstein

While a relatively small site with one casement (bunker) for viewing, they have packed in a lot of information, artifacts and photos of it's demise. The gentleman (volunteer) who was looking after the site today was most informative, kind and helpful......while it normally closes at 12 to 1400, he was keeping it open so people could see the site and contents alike....fair play. This is not a massive complex by any stretch of the imagination but well worth a visit if you are in the area. I drive down from Strasbourg, it was shy of an hour's journey. From here I went to the Maginot museum in Turcksheim another 40 mins away but well worth it. Fair play to the great volunteers who give their time so us "Joe public" get to see...

Auch mit verschlossener Tür ein Ort voller Geschichte

Manchmal plant man gut – und manchmal steht man vor verschlossenen Türen. So geschehen bei unserem Besuch der Casemate 35/3 der Maginot-Linie. Das Museum hatte geschlossen, aber: Der Besuch hat sich trotzdem gelohnt.

Denn: Die Außenanlage ist frei zugänglich. Schon von der Straße aus sieht man den Sherman M4A1 „Hartmannsweilerkopf“, eine M16-Halbkette und einen M8 Greyhound – und das ist nicht einfach nur Technik, sondern greifbare Geschichte im Freien. Ein großer Parkplatz ist direkt daneben, also perfekt für einen kurzen Halt.

Besonders eindrucksvoll: Der Weg rund um den Bunker. Man sieht dort noch Einschläge von Granaten und Bomben, Risse im Beton, Spuren von Gewalt, die kein Museumsschild braucht, um Wirkung zu entfalten. Der Ort spricht für sich.

Glorya, meine kleine 11 cm große Giraffe mit Glitzeraugen, war natürlich auch dabei. Sie stand still neben dem Greyhound und sagte dann: „Ob sie wohl dachten, das hier würde für immer halten?“ – Vielleicht. Und vielleicht hält es ja doch – als Mahnung.

Fazit: Auch wenn das Museum geschlossen ist, lohnt sich der Stopp. Die Fahrzeuge, der Bunker, die Einschläge – alles greifbar, direkt und eindrücklich. Mit etwas Planung vielleicht sogar mit Innenbesichtigung – aber selbst ohne bleibt dieser Ort ein Fenster in eine Zeit, die man nicht...
