The vanilla plantation, Domaine du Grand Hazier — Attraction in Saint-Denis

Very lovely and interesting place. The plantation is quite small but lovely. We booked the guided tour- we were told the guide doesn’t speak English and they gave us a brochure to read instead. It was very detailed and informative- very interesting details about history of vanilla on the island and the production. At the end we found out that the guide did speak English- she just couldn’t bother to tell us anything (not even instructions where to go and what to do)… They have a nice shop of different vanilla...

Une visite a faire pour découvrir la vanille. Vous pouvez réserver votre venue sur internet. N'hésitez pas a aller directement sur place car tous les horaires de visite ne sont pas en ligne. Un film de 12 minutes en introduction vous explique l'histoire de la vanille et sa production actuelle. Ensuite un guide vous emmène a l'extérieur pour vous expliquer les différentes variétés et leur mode de culture. Vous découvrirez ensuite le tri, le séchage, le calibrage et toutes les étapes avant la mise en vente. Maxime notre guide récemment arrivé a la vanilleraie maitrise bien son sujet et répond facilement a toutes les questions. La visite se termine a la boutique ou vous trouvez de la vanille et des produits dérivés. Le tarif de la vanille peut paraitre élevé mais identique a ce que vous trouvez en France dans la grande distribution avec certainement une qualité bien supérieure (pas encore utilisée). L'accès au domaine est bien indiqué mais les dernières centaines de mètres se font via un chemin caillouteux truffé d'ornières. Attention a être très précautionneux avec votre véhicule, surtout si véhicule de location. Malgré cela nous avons crevé...

Now I understand why REAL vanilla is so expensive! It was great to see the process, touch and smell the pods and of course to eat the vanilla ice cream 😋 the short video has English subtitles and there are information booklets available in English and German (maybe more but I didn't ask). These booklets cannot be taken home so be sure to ask for one before the start...
