The main attraction here is the garden and walking paths. There’s a labyrinth, an herb garden with fruit trees, walking paths between huge trees and yews sculpted into different shapes, some very large interactive art sculptures, and a winding stream through the space. The grounds are truly impressive and a calm oasis to explore.
The chateau itself is gorgeous from the outside but not as impressive on the inside. There is a very large event hall on the main level. When I visited, there were kids games in the basement/ former kitchen area.
Bathrooms on the upper level of the chateau are accessible via a small door outside at the north west corner of the building (to the far left of the large exterior staircase). The gift shop has so many nice books and locally made products. They offer drinks you can enjoy on the terrace as well as some other treats. There are more bathrooms here.
Residents of Joinville can get a special pass to access the gardens on a regular basis.
During the summer months, every Sunday there is entertainment for children and every Thursday evening there is the “Apéro du Jeudi” with live music and outdoor games for kids.
The Apéro is a fun event! Entry is 2€. You can either reserve a table and a simple catered plate of food for 15€ per person, or just pay the 2€ to sit on the lawn. Picnicking isn’t allowed, because the goal of these events is to support a local catering company. However, if not all the food plates are sold by 9pm, lawn guests can go and buy one. There’s a bar where all visitors can purchase wine, beer and some non-alcoholic options.
The staff are very friendly and accommodating. The one downside is that unfortunately the castle and grounds are not...
Read moreWhat beutiful gardens the formal gardens are wonderful and the parkland offers a lovely shady walk when the sun was as hot as it was the day we visited.
Dog friendly, they are only not allowed in the formal boxed hedged area they are allowed to walk around then.
The house itself is really a performing arts area but the building itself is beutiful.
The staff were very friendly and it was cheap to visit half at least the price of a simular garden in the UK.
Small cafe on site as well
I'm the summer July and August they have musical and performance arts in the gardens I understand.
Good parking as well even for motorhomes
Well...
Read moreThe gardens are beautiful, as mentioned in others’ reviews. I am not sure the cost of €6,50 per adult to enter equates to the experience though. The chateau was empty with no art on the walls and unfurnished. We only had access to two rooms to look at and this didn’t add much to the experience. Disappointing as we have seen many other excellent historical places filled with art and explanation (like in Dijon who seem to provide much more for free for the tourist). To add insult to injury, we were expected to pay an extra euro to get the information...
