The museum was very educational and interesting. We were able to use translation devices that translated the French into English for two euros each. Learning about how ingrained the sugar industry is in reunion island and how historically as significant things changed around the world affected how reunion ran and managed things was surprising. Especially learning about slavery (volunteer labour) and then indentured workers which didn’t surprise me. But the sugar industry still prevailed. There were so many flavoured rums and you get three tastings with your tour. I bought coconut rum. But I also bought a set of three rums coconut banana, sweet potato cake and peanut butter. There was also a sweet candy known as galabe which I was very keen to try and I bought a bag of sugar. This might seem strange but the sugar here is incredibly delicious and tastes different from other places around the world. Outside there was a food truck selling authentic creole food sweet potato chicken and bean sprouts and this very tasty sausage all with rice and beans. I also took a little video of the sugar cane growing. The sugar cane season is between July and December. The cookies are a sugar cookie made with locally grown...
Read moreReunion is Rum. A must-do. This is a very professional operation: you get your "handy" with English as one of the options and off you go at your own pace. Loads of info boards, some actual old equipment, videos, etc. If you can't find out what you need to know about rum in Reunion here, you can't find it anywhere,
There are loads of parking on site. They provide for handicapped people: wheelchairs, lifts, etc.
My only issue was the tasting part. You can only taste two types of rum when there was at least 20 on offer. Really? I have no issue with paying for a tasting, preferably waived if you make a purchase or two in the shop afterwards. A bit stupid, really. We walked out with three bottles but would probably have bought more if we could have tasted a few more. This stuff is not cheap when you pay in ZAR.
There obviously was the ever-present gift shop at the end of the tour. We didn't mind because we could conveniently pick up a few bottles after...
Read moreAfter looking for somewhere to sample Réunion rhum, I settled on Saga du Rhum based on reviews.
Easy to find. The clerk in the ticket booth spoke English and was very accommodating. The museum is very interesting and takes around 20 minutes to move through reading the English signage. Might take longer with the optional audio guide, but I didn't find it necessary.
The tasting at the end was excellent. We were offered 3 rums/liqueurs to sample. The team walked us through everything that was available before we made our decisions, which gave us the time and info we needed to choose well. The caramelised mango liqueur was easily our favourite, but all 6 of our samples were delicious:
10yo rum 5yo rum Sweet potato liqueur Guava and chilli liqueur Caramelised mango liqueur Passion fruit liqueur
The team informed us that the rums and liqueurs are available in the duty free shop at the airport. We will absolutely be picking some up...
