Ouvrage Rhorbach is an infantry fort or petite ouvrage of the maginot line, near Rohrbach. It is better known and signposted as fort Casso. The petite ouvrages were supported by artillery from gross ouvrages, in this case nearby fort Simershof (also can be visited). Visits are by appointment so I was able to book online and received a very prompt and helpful reply. The cost of the visit was 7eu which is a bargain for a 3 hour guided tour. The tour begins and ends at the fort entrance and takes in every aspect of the fort operation, from cooking and sleeping areas to munition storage and fighting areas. The highlight was a visit to a combat block where visitors were able to work the retracting turret and operate its several weapons. Not firing it of course. The fort is very well preserved, dry, clean and smelling of oil. It almost looks new and working in every detail. The high degree of maintenance is a credit to its operators. Our guide really knew his stuff and spoke good English. The main level is about 30m below ground and reached by many stairs and a working elevator. I walked down but was happy to take the elevator back up. To visit the combat block you also need to climb stairs. No elevator here. In fine weather it is possible to visit the outside of the blocks but it was raining heavily this day so that was not possible. These forts were a marvel of their time and are sophisticated even by today's standards. This fort is definitely worth a visit and if you see no other maginot line fort, check out fort Casso. VISITORS SHOULD WEAR WARM CLOTHING, it is 13°in...
Read moreAbsolutely fantastic tour with Ludowik at Fort Casso! We had the pleasure of being guided by Ludowik (my sincere apologies if I misspelled the name!), whose flawless English, deep passion for history, and incredible storytelling made the entire visit unforgettable.
He explained everything clearly, interwove fascinating anecdotes and humor into the tour, and shared many unique details that we had never heard before — like why the latrine doors were built low (to prevent unnoticed suicides).
His enthusiasm was contagious, and thanks to him, Fort Casso came to life. It wasn’t just a tour — it was a deeply human, moving, and insightful experience. Highly...
Read moreFort Casso or Ouvrage Rohrbach was our second visit to a point on the Maginot line, our first being Simserhof. Our tour at Ouvrage was a French/English one, and our guide was very accommodating and friendly and took the time to make sure that we understood what was going on at each point on the tour. We appreciate it so much! There were hands-on activities toward the end of the tour that were interesting for those participating in it which Simserhof did not have. However, this by no means diminishes the tour at Simserhof. They were both excellent in information, but similar. I would suggest only choosing one in a day. We would bring our own...
