A really important memorial and museum to what is, for many British history buffs, a woefully under-studied campaign to capture the south of France, Operation Dragoon. Beautifully laid out with french and English explanations throughout, the visitor really benefits from learning about the background and build up right up to the operation itself with all aspects, including the prelim commando raids on the îles d'Hyere, the British/American Operation Rugby parachute landings and the beach assaults themselves. There is also copious detail on the very stubborn combat by French forces to retake Toulon itself and other 'Festungs' along that coast. The panoramic screen layout for the operation landings themselves is one of the best I've seen.
Overall a very worthwhile museum/memorial visit to a campaign that deserves to be better known (it was, to an extent, a victim of its own success and flawlessness in terms of notoriety).
My only complaint is that the gift shop is genuinely non-existent, and it would be relatively easy to make some memorabilia marked with Operation Dragoon. The Musee d'Marine down in Toulon city near the harbour manages to do this, so would recommend the management take...
Read moreThis is an amazing memorial and museum which should be a port of call for everyone visiting Toulon.
The staff were especially nice, and the museum is well thought out and is laid out extremely well, with lots of interesting artefacts and accounts which really bring the story alive, and reminds us how lucky we are. It was all in English as well as in French, and added bonus you get the best view from the museums 3 different levels.
I can’t recommend this museum enough, it should be compulsory to visit it if in Toulon.
As an added bonus Mount Faron in beautiful and easily accessibly by cable car and bus (number 40). Buy your tickets at the tourist office and you can get a combined bus and cable car ticket for about €6.50. There is an additional charge for the memorial/museum, which is €5.00 or free if you...
Read moreTop-notch, focused museum. Well worth the visit for a wide-ranging audience.
English is a first-class citizen. Same font size throughout; even captions are translated. Thanks for that.
Museum is nicely bookended by strategic discussions of what led up to and what came after military actions in the south of France. In the middle are exhibits on operations/tactics which are supported & humanized by compelling artifacts.
Solidly curated narrative about this operation, why it matters, and its legacy. Museum successfully appeals to various audiences from kids to those wishing to explore topics in depth.
