Vouvray is known for its consistent climate and limestone soil contributing to 100+ years of still and sparkling chenin blanc winemaking. What is less known are the effects of climate change on this region within the past 10 years: drought, torrential floods, and nutrient-depleted soil. While some Vouvray producers continue business-as-usual, others like Chateau Gaudrelle are adapting to these crises to produce excellent wine in the long-run: achieving organic certification, implementing biodynamic methods, using a minimal amount of sulfur, etc. Charlotte is everything you want in a tour guide (knowledge, passion, conviviality) and managed to express her wine geekiness without any pretense or superiority. We learned some much from our VIP tour in English that I’m sure will shape our minds and palates for years to come. And their wine is truly excellent!!! We love dry, mineral-rich, natural wine and were overwhelmed with the quality of their lineup. I highly recommend trying their L’Extra Brut sparkling wine (aged 5 years) and Clos de la Huppe still wine. Their prices are a STEAL for the quality. Hope they get all the recognition they deserve because Chateau Gaudrelle is a gem among many Vouvray producers.

We had the privilege of meeting Alexandre, the winemaker of the house, while having a tasting and tour of their cave located next to the tasting room. His hospitality was gracious and wines exquisite. The winery is conveniently located next to a bus station with direct access to Tours a short ride away. As an American visiting in the off-season we were welcomed with kindness and he was able to speak to us in fluent English making sure to talk about the vinification process and what made the his and the wines of Vouvray so unique. I hope we have the opportunity to return.

It was an Impromptu visit after a meeting in Châtellerault. Even though the tour schedule had past, the wine marker allowed us to self visit their vineyard which was a hill climb about 5-10 mins drive up. We had much fun searching for the fruits and taking photos. After which we went back to the wine factory for a wonder English guided wine tasting, giving us a great in-depth understanding of the different types of wines and their tastes. A wonderful place for meeting great people with fantastic wines at an amazing price!

Aucune...
