Compact, simple and very old. The Nekresi Monastery can be seen on the foothills of the Caucasus from the შ43 between the vineyards. The monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Georgia, was founded in the 6th century. The foundation is sometimes attributed to Abibos, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. The monastery was closed by the Russians shortly after 1811 and did not reopen until 2000. In addition to the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the publicly accessible part of the monastery consists of the Church of the Archangel, the Chapel of the Dead, an episcopal palace and some other buildings. From the parking lot at the foot of the hill it is a strenuous climb to the monastery, fortunately there is also a shuttle bus (possibly) for the less fit tourists or pilgrims, because I would definitely recommend a visit to this small, tranquil monastery with the...

Out of all religious monuments i've seen in Georgia so far, there's Nekresi Monstery, founded in 4th century, that stands alone. Located at Greater Caucasus foot on a wooded hill, it overviews a picturesque Alazani's valley in Kakheti region. Back in the antiquity days, Nekresi was a flourishing city, but then swallen by surrounding forests, also disappearing from memories up until its discovery by modern-days archeologists. There are also ruins of a Zoroastrian temple of fire down in the valley in between multiple vineyards, a symbol of an ancient religious cult which arose long before the emergence of Christianity and Islam.

The relics of 38 Georgian Saints are kept at Nekresi. One of the most powerfull places in...

I really want to understand the unhappiness of the people working on the monasteries… no one smiles, no one say hi or good morning, the look at you with sad faces and they ruin the experience. At the entrance people look at you with scared faces, there is a bus that only work for groups (10 people minimun), we found couples straggling to get to the top (1.5 km, without a bus), it looks like they want you to suffer and you feel unwelcome. The tourism department of Georgia should take a look of some tourist places, teach them english and how to...

The site offers a captivating glimpse into historical architecture and religious heritage. The monastery complex, set on a hill with stunning views of the Alazani Valley, is a true gem. Walking through the grounds feels like stepping back in time. The tranquility and spiritual atmosphere are palpable. Highly recommend a trip to Nekresi if you’re exploring the region – the history and panoramic landscapes are not to be missed. Make sure to wear comfortable shoes for the hike up!
