Compact, simple and very old. The Nekresi Monastery can be seen on the foothills of the Caucasus from the შ43 between the vineyards. The monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Georgia, was founded in the 6th century. The foundation is sometimes attributed to Abibos, one of the Thirteen Assyrian Fathers. The monastery was closed by the Russians shortly after 1811 and did not reopen until 2000. In addition to the Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God, the publicly accessible part of the monastery consists of the Church of the Archangel, the Chapel of the Dead, an episcopal palace and some other buildings. Located at Greater Caucasus foot on a wooded hill, it overviews a picturesque Alazani's valley in Kakheti region. Back in the antiquity days, Nekresi was a flourishing city, but then swallen by surrounding forests, also disappearing from memories up until its discovery by modern-days archeologists. There are also ruins of a Zoroastrian temple of fire down in the valley in between multiple vineyards, a symbol of an ancient religious cult which arose long before the emergence of Christianity and Islam.

Read moreI really want to understand the unhappiness of the people working on the monasteries… no one smiles, no one say hi or good morning, the look at you with sad faces and they ruin the experience. At the entrance people look at you with scared faces, there is a bus that only work for groups (10 people minimun), we found couples straggling to get to the top (1.5 km, without a bus), it looks like they want you to suffer and you feel unwelcome.
