The hike to Gurgeniani waterfall (also known as the Big waterfall) is a great one to take on within Lagodekhi Park. The waterfall itself is really beautiful, and the hike to get there is very pleasant. It travels alongside the river throughout and through very green and clean forest. This hike does not start at the main entrance to the park, but at the Gurgeniani entrance about 10 minutes' drive away. I'd say the hike is generally 'easy' but in August 2017, bridges were missing at several sections, which required us to remove our shoes and wade through the (quite strong) river, or to hoist yourself over some large boulders which required a fair amount of upper body strength to pull yourself over. Hiking boots are definitely not needed, but I'd recommend good running shoes, to help you keep your balance while scrambling over rocks, and to help support your feet as you will be walking quite a bit over the rocky banks of the river. It took us about 2.5 hours to get to the waterfall walking at a gentle pace, about 2 hours to get back. A few suggestions based on our experience: Do pay attention to the trail markers, especially on the way back as it can be tricky to spot the actual trail in sections. Bring your bathing suit if you'd like to get into one of the pools at the base of the waterfall, or one of the smaller waterfalls/cascades along the hike. Do wear sunscreen - while half of the hike is through shaded forest, if you're walking during the afternoon the sun can be quite strong. There are several clean springs as you get close to the waterfall (and at the waterfall itself) so it is possible to refill your water bottles for the return journey. Lastly, for safety I wouldn't recommend doing this hike alone, and if hiking in the mid-afternoon, making sure to turn around from the waterfall with plenty of time before sunset. We didn't meet anyone on our return journey and it would be easy to run into difficulty or to turn an ankle in the twilight.

Ninoskhevi Waterfall (Great Waterfall) Trail

8.5 km, 4 - 6 hrs, pedestrian, difficulty: average

The route starts from the Gurgeniani Information Center and follows the Ninoskhevi River on a narrow path. The sound of the river, the little waterfalls, huge stones, and cool breeze wandering through the valley make the trip both highly entertaining and adventurous. Take a few steps and magic scenery will spread in front of you – a 40 m long Ninoskhevi waterfall which is one of the most beautiful in Georgia. Its noise attracts the surroundings and sets a new dimension for viewers. On the way we come across rare relict plants such as Lagodekhiangentiana, Lagodekhian snowdrop, Julia purusula, bladdernut, wing nut, chestnut, Georgian oak and etc.

It is also possible to come across roe, deer, wild boar and...

A must-visit gem in Lagodekhi! Ninoskhevi Waterfall is one of the most beautiful natural spots in the Lagodekhi Protected Areas. The hike to the waterfall is around 8 km one way, so plan for a full day if you're doing the round trip (about 16 km total). The trail winds through a scenic forest with rivers, wooden bridges, and rich greenery—perfect for nature lovers.

The waterfall itself is absolutely stunning—tall, powerful, and surrounded by peaceful nature. The cool mist at the base feels amazing after the long walk. Great for photos, relaxing, or even a quick (cold!) dip if you're up for it.

Tips:

Wear good hiking shoes—some parts can be muddy or slippery. Bring water and snacks—no shops on the trail. Start early to avoid rushing. If you're in Lagodekhi and enjoy hiking, don’t miss...

A large forest road of 16 kilometers leads to one of the largest waterfalls in Georgia at its end. We went there with the Yaylag TV tour, accompanied by 8 guides who were following the road properly, and there were no problems. Going with a large group added an extra interest to the tour as we encountered people from different cultures. I don't think it's a suitable road for children because some parts of the road were very narrow and dangerous. Yaylag TV - Instagram: @yaylagtv

Ninoskhevi is a once in a lifetime experience i feel. It is a heaven for nature enthusiasts. You'll see wide varieties of fungi, wildflowers. Majestic Georgian oak, chestnut trees on your hike. We saw one water snake as well. Just return before its dawn. The officer in charge is a friendly man, multilingual, if you can, have a conversation with him, it will surely leave you happier. If you are decently fit, and able to walk 16-18 km, you'll never regret visiting ninoskhevi.

The nature is great, lovely place and amazing river but terrible signs. If you follow the blue one, it mislead you twice. Once at the altan and second when you pass the 2 d bridge (or you are next to it). The blue says follow the river, which we did, but it's quite hard one. Instead, there is another road, above and while yes there are a lot of ups and down, I think much better. And again - no marks. So watch out for this. I hope they fix it
