The Georgia-Russia Friendship Monument (also called The Memorial of Friendship) is a large, colorful Soviet-era monument built in 1983 to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of Georgievsk (1783), which made Georgia a protectorate of the Russian Empire.
Despite its name, the monument has a complicated history, as Georgia and Russia have had tense relations, especially after the 2008 war. Today, it remains a popular tourist stop for its breathtaking views and unique Soviet architecture.
