The Three Country Point – NL / BE / DE

Visiting the Three Country Point (Drielandenpunt) is one of those experiences that feels both quirky and meaningful. It's not every day you can stand in three countries at once, and this particular spot does a fantastic job turning a geographical intersection into a memorable destination.

🌍 Location & Atmosphere

The Drielandenpunt is tucked away in the hills near Vaals, and the drive or hike up is part of the charm—lush greenery, rolling terrain, and peaceful countryside roads that already make you feel like you're stepping into something special. When you arrive, the area opens up into a beautifully maintained public space with trails, viewing platforms, cafés, and attractions for all ages.

The actual border marker is simple but iconic: a small circular monument with labeled sections for Nederland (NL), Belgien (BE), and Deutschland (DE). It’s a surprisingly powerful feeling to straddle three nations with just a few steps. There’s almost always a line of people snapping photos standing on all three spots at once—it’s touristy, yes, but in the best, most wholesome way.

🗺️ Things to Do

There’s a lot more than just the marker. A highlight is the Labyrinth, a large hedge maze that’s honestly more fun and challenging than you’d expect. It’s well-designed with water features, dead ends, and a viewing platform in the center if you want to scope things out. It's a big hit for kids and adults alike.

Another great feature is the observation tower on the Dutch side. Climb to the top, and you’ll get a breathtaking panoramic view of the region. On a clear day, you can see far into all three countries—fields, villages, and forests stretching out in every direction. It's also a great place to appreciate how culturally and geographically distinct the borders are despite being so close together.

There are also various walking trails around the point, which take you through peaceful woods and across the borders several times over. Each path is well-marked and offers different levels of difficulty and time commitment.

🍽️ Food & Facilities

There are multiple cafés and restaurants nearby, mostly casual, with lots of outdoor seating. I had lunch at one of the Belgian-side cafés—simple but tasty. Think waffles, fries, local beer, and hearty portions. Prices are fair, and the service was friendly and multilingual (Dutch, German, French, and English). It’s very accommodating to international visitors.

Bathrooms are clean and accessible, there’s a decent amount of parking (though it can get tight on weekends), and everything is stroller/wheelchair friendly within the main plaza area.

🎒 Tips for Visiting

Bring comfortable shoes if you plan to walk or hike—there’s a lot of nature to enjoy.

Arrive early on weekends or holidays—it gets crowded fast, especially in good weather.

If you’re a fan of quirky souvenirs, there are small gift shops with fun, country-themed items and even “three-country” passport stamps.

If you're into geography or travel, this is a bucket list stop.

💬 Final Thoughts

The Three Country Point is more than just a novelty. It’s a place where borders, culture, and nature intersect in a peaceful and fascinating way. Whether you're stopping by for a quick photo op or spending the whole day exploring the trails and attractions, it’s a genuinely enjoyable and unique experience. You’ll leave with a smile, great photos, and a strange sense of satisfaction knowing you stood in three places at once.

Highly recommend for families, couples, solo travelers, and geography...

Went to this place in the early August, on a sunny day.

There are two ways to reach this point.

One is via walking trail (provided photos below) and Another is via car road.

I took the walking trial while going up during evening. This doesn't fall into best walking trail but it was decent. I went on a weekday and I didn't find any one during my walk, except for few runners and local people. If you are carrying luggage bag, I wouldn't recommend this trial.

After around 30 mins of walking, I reached this place. Nothing fancy. Just a stone where the three countries meet.

There were couple of cafes which were closed and the access to the tower was restricted. Only tourists were present at this point and not a single local person. So, it was hard to get an understanding of this place.

I was hoping that cafés will be open at the point and I could relax a bit by sipping some coffee, but was utterly disappointed. There is one cafe overlooking the hills one kilometer away from this point, but it was too tiring to reach this cafe. So, it's a challenge for people who take walking trial.

Wouldn't recommend walking unless you are a enthusiast trekker yourself.

While returning back, I hitchhiked back on a old couple's car. They were very kind enough to let me in. Overall, a decent experience. Visiting during sunsets might not a good thing since the tower might be closed during evenings and the place is surrounded by a lot of trees.

People who visited this place in winter, what's...
