If you're in the region and want to experience what it's like to be Bavarian then this place should go to your list of places to visit. Andechs is shrouded in history and culture. There's not much choice of food but wow, it tastes like nothing else. My recommendation is a whole Haxe (pork shank) with potato salad, a large Brezen (pretzel), and a Maß (1 litre of beer) to wash it all down. Tip: Ask for some scraps as well (bits of meat and crackling that fall off when cutting joints). Scrumptious!
Everything is self service. Find a table first then collect your beer and food.
The place gets very busy on sunny days off. If you're lucky, you may find a seat outside with a view. I've always managed to find a free table somewhere.
Staff are typically abrupt all over upper Bavaria and come across as unfriendly. The same here but in my experience it's their way of being truthful. It also adds to the authenticity of the environment. If you need help the staff will always go the extra mile for you and will want to show off their jewel inside upper Bavaria. Staff always wear traditional clothing (local visitors too) and if you're lucky you will also get to hear a Bavarian band whilst you enjoy your meal.
There's plenty of free parking but the tradition is to plan a long walk with friends and family and maybe get a bus back to where you came from.
From the carpark (or bus stop), there is a walk of about 300m to the restaurant or bear garden. The short walk to the restaurant is quite steep but manageable if you are in a group which can help out a little. If you are alone, I'm sure other visitors will help you up and down the hill.
A brilliant day out for the whole family. If you want to impress someone, look no further.
Gift shops can also be found on the premises.
Prices are fair especially when you compare the quality of what you get.
Very clean and well kept. There's even a small playground for the...
Read moreWe found our best adventures happen when we get a referral and when we keep an open mind. Luckily a friend of ours referred Andechs Monastery to us, otherwise we never would have visited. The Benedictine monastery is located little more than one hour way from Munich. So we took a small day trip from Munich taking the S Bahn plus a local bus.
The monastery is in the centre of a small village (here), including a Gothic church (here), brewery and gift shop. The beautiful Gothic church is from the 1400’s and has attracted pilgrims and tourists from around the world. Andechs Monastery is also a well-known cultural centre and for it’s seven varieties of Andechs Monastery beer and gastronomy.
We visited the village and stayed for lunch in the Klostergasthof restaurant. Curious about German culture, we were ready for the typical German gastronomy and the local beer. It was fun and well priced for a big meal. It was crowded since we visited on a Sunday afternoon, yet we managed to share a table with a nice couple from Italy (cheers). We discovered that we could communicate in French. And so, a new connection was made !
The small village is really beautiful and fun to visit. Make sure to visit the church, the small gift shop for a small souvenir (also to encourage the Monastery), the restaurant for a meal or a beer tasting (offered for groups after a brewery tour).

Read moreRead moreWe visited on a coldish May day, when it was overcast and raining very lightly or threatening to rain. The inside tables were packed - basically no chance of getting a table so we sat outside at table that was under a roof but apart from that open to the elements. I found the food choice somewhat limited - on the warm food side there was a choice of pork, pork or pork. Schweinhaxe, Bellypork etc. The schweinhaxe came in one size - large - one costs €18, depending on weight, then you want brez'n or potato salad with it - goodbye €20. There didn't seem to be an option for having half of a schwein haxe. And no chicken or duck or any other meat often found in beer gardens. A Soup or something would have been a nice offering - the german mountain huts all offer good pea or lentil soups or soups with pasta in. However the beer was good. I can imagine on a nice warm sunny day it would be a nice day out if you can get a table - but take your own food to avoide spending a fortune, but i guess on a nice day it would be unbelievably busy. Is it really worth it over all of the other very good beer garden in southern germany - not...
