Measuring aproximatelly 2000 ha, the Anklamer Stadtbruch is Germany´s largest redrowned area. It has not been drained since 1998, leaving a lot of the forest planted in the previous centuries with rotten roots and dieing. In the center is forming an extensive rain moor, where peat extraction took place since XVII. The surrounding grassland sites have prevously been extensively dewatered, fertilized and cultivated and used as pasture and in the 20th century, a further expansion of the trench network took place. As a result of the intensification of use, there were numerous ecological problems. For example, some of the areas have sunk below sea level down to -80 cm HN. In addition, there was a drastic loss of endangered plant and animal species. In 1995, a storm surge led to dike breaches and a large-scale flooding of the area, leading to the site we know are able to visit.
