Autobahnkirche St. Christophorus, Baden-Baden — Attraction in Baden-Baden

A wonderful Christian welcome... EXCEPT if you are 6 travellers from France with 2 small vans containing 3 horses, who, after 12 hours on the road, finally see an open empty car park (i repeat EMPTY) next to a lovely grassy area. Ah great we thought, after the disappointment of seeing the service station parking completely full with no available spaces, here was somewhere we could park for a breather and to give our horses a much needed break, safely, not in anyones way... No sooner had we opened the doors to step out of our vehicles were we descended upon in a terribly unchristian manner and told car park was for church goers only. Disappointed but respectful we climbed back into our vehicles... It was 19h on a Wednesday night... The place was deserted... Oh except for this Harpe that sent us packing. Oh and the man in the pink T shirt who, once we had parked in the only space we could find at the roadside off the churches property, came out and started taking photos of our van. This was also our welcome to Germany. I can only wonder in such a situation what WOULD Jesus do? A wonderful example of your beliefs don't make you a good person, your actions do....

War vollkommen überrascht als ich halt an der Autobahnkirche machte. Man muss etwa 2 km von der Autobahn ab fahren, aber es hat sich gelohnt. Es ist ein sehr modernes Gebäude, wie eine Pyramide. Der Klang in dieser Kirche ist auch ganz schön laut. Ich sang das Ave Maria um zu beten und es war ein riesiges Echo. Doch man kann noch runter in eine kleinere Kapelle im Keller gehen. Man fühlt sich dort wie in einer Pyramide. Es ist echt toll da unten und das hatte ich nach diesem Neubau nicht gedacht. Was completely surprised when I stopped at the highway church. You have to drive about 2 km off the Autobahn, but it was worth it. It's a very modern building, like a pyramid. The sound in this church is also pretty loud. I sang the Ave Maria to pray and it had a huge echo. But you can still go down to a smaller chapel in the basement. You feel like you are in a pyramid there. It's really great down there and I hadn't thought of that after this...

Eine Oase der Ruhe mitten im Verkehrsgetümmel. Daran bin ich schon Jahrzehnte mehr oder weniger achtlos vorbeigefahren. Aber an diesem Tag beschloss ich, die Autobahnkirche endlich einmal anzusehen und zu besuchen.  Als ich auf dem Parkplatz der Kirche anhielt und aus dem Auto ausstieg, umfing mich sofort ein Gefühl von Abgeschiedenheit und Ruhe. Der Anblick der pyramidenförmigen Kirche und der sie umgebenden Stelen vermittelte mir ein tiefes Gefühl der Einsamkeit und Entdeckung. Das Innere der Kirche gliedert sich in eine Oberkirche für die Liturgie und eine Krypta, die zum stillen Gebet und zur Besinnung einlädt. Die Atmosphäre ist geprägt von einer besonderen Ruhe, die den Besucher dazu einlädt, für einen Moment innezuhalten und Kraft zu tanken. Im Außenbereich der Kirche führen vier Ahornalleen in Kreuzform zu dem Gebäude, wobei jede Allee durch eine mächtige Bildsäule aus Beton...
