English readers and non tour related people please read.

I am not one to write Google reviews nor ones that are long but I feel like this needs to be said and I can't find any other review saying anything about this.

This was a gourgus place to visit but there were a few things that we weren't aware of when we visited. Being on an island it was obvious that we were going to need some sort of boat to get there. Little did we know that it was an entirely different company that did the boats. Their website is here https://www.chiemsee-schifffahrt.de/de/home/ to get those tickets in advance or to look at the website. However that website has some things in English but not the pricing. You can leave from different docks all around the lake and the prices will be different for each one of them. The one we left from was prien/stock and it was 10.90€ for each person. Depending on the dock it might be more or less. They also have a ticket that is for the Grand tour. That was a 2.5 hour long tour going around the lake visiting the surrounding towns. It was 18.50 I think for that and had limited times. We didn't do it so I don't know how it was or if it drops you off at the castle. You have to find that yourself but I couldn't find anything about it. When we got to the island we walked up to a pay place. Their you can buy entry into the castle and the Ludwig II's museum that is inside the castle this was 11€. There is also a ticket that you can buy that gets you into all three of Ludwig II's castle. I think it was something like 30€. To get tickets in advance for this castle, here is the website again a bit confusing but better. https://herrenchiemsee.bsv-ticketshop.de/en To be able to visit the rooms and see them with your own eyes you have to take a tour. (This was included in the ticket we bought) The first English tour was at 10:30 so if your showed up like we did at 9:15 on one of the first boats, just know you will have to wait for a while. There is another museum on the island in the Monastary. The ticket we bought said that this museum was included in the price however when we went up to it they turned us away saying we didn't have the right ticket so be aware of that. There were very few signs directing you how to get to the castle and we did get a little lost trying to get there. You can take a carriage ride, but that costs 5€ each way. I am too cheap for that so we didn't go. Some other notes to keep in mind:

  1. You can't take pictures in the castle itself.
  2. The gardens to walk in are free. It is beautiful so if you don't mind not going in the castle you would only have to pay for the boat.
  3. Show up early. It gets busy. The day we went was an acception because it was pouring down rain, but when we left it was really starting to get busy because the rain was letting up.
  4. Parking at the boat dock is sort of expensive. And the bathroom at the dock you have to pay to use. This was a magical place but it really is marred by how much money you have to shell out and the confusing prices on literally everything there. I...

You cannot visit without going in LARGE groups with a tour guide. The guide gives VERY little information and rushes you through this spectacular space. Worse are the people within the group who do not shut up so you cannot hear the few words the tour guide is trying to share.

Also, the fountains are only turned on every 30 minutes or so for a Very few minutes at a time. Was disappointing. The shrubs were overgrown and not manicured so the place looked sloppy and untidy.

For what they charge and how many visitors they get it should be well maintained.

The castle is great. It is the system of forcing mediocre uninteresting large group tours, combined with a zero photography policy that sti ks.

We didn't find the museum very interesting as a lot of it referenced the Residenz in Munich which we enjoyed very much.

The augustinian monastery visit on the island was even more disappointing. No real access to the beautiful structure or interesting history.

Just a few rooms used by king ludwig and a bunch of dry german history better learned in many other museums in Bavaria. If you enjoy the art of Exeter they had a huge collection, but we are not fans. The Maler em Chiemsee gallery was nice with some lovely landscapes.

The parks, grounds and walking trails are lovely.

We were unable to see the cathedral chapter church because they had no guided tours the entire 6 hours we were on the island. Very disappointed.

Our final disappointment was being unable to enter the beautiful former Parish Church of St Maria. It is only opened VERY limited times, again with a required guide

the website is abysmal. It should provide details on WHEN each building can be toured and how one can get assigned to these tours.

We would not have paid an expensive train ride, comprehensive ticket price and ferry fares had we known how little we would get to see and experience.

This could be such a treasure in the Bavarian region if better managed.

There are lockers that would hold backpacks and small...

Last May this year, I had an opportunity to visit Herrenchiemsee Palace in Bavaria Germany. Actually I have to say that, this palace is very beautiful and very luxurious. The palace is located in Herreninsel island one of islands at Chiemsee lake. It was built by King Ludwig II in 1878, and because The King fervently admired King Louis XIV of France, so The Palace was built resembling that of Versailles Palace in France. In front of The Palace is a large square was ornately decorated with statues, fountains and a nice garden of flowers. The Palace is surrounding by shady forest so when I came here I had a feeling like I had arrived a fairytale country... In order to get here, I bought a Bavaria ticket cost 27 Euro per person. This ticket is very advantages. If you buy this ticket you can Unlimited number of trips within Bavaria in one day Travel with up to 5 persons for only EUR 9 per additional passenger Valid from Monday to Friday from 9 am to 3 am the next day On weekends and on public holidays the ticket is valid from midnight Children up to 5 years always travel free of charge. From Munich Station I took RE5 ( a regional train ) direct to Salzburg ( Austria ), and I droped of at Prien Am Chiemsee Station and went down stairs to go to opposite of the station and buy a return combo special train and boat ticket to get to herreninsel island. This combo ticket cost 13.40 Euro. And once you get to the island, and if you want to visit inside the palace you have to buy a ticket… there are 3 main attractions in the island Palace, Museum and Monastery. Combo ticket to visit Palace, Museum, and Monastery is 10 Euro/ per person. Actually it is not difficult to come to the Palace, althought the Palace is far away from Munich, but I think if you had a chance to get to Munich try to visit this Palace. I am sure you will feel very satisfied with the things...

Fantastic location and building - but a number of small things lets it down. Whilst an incredible building and setting, it sadly seems a victim of its own success. With coach loads of tourists arriving, it’s as if they really don’t need to try. The guided tour itself round the rooms is good and our guide was very engaging, but the story they tell is really only skin deep. Oddly photography is not permitted which, given the richness of the rooms and how they were designed to show off, seems perverse. An audio guide allowing you to go deeper if you wanted to would have improved the experience massively. Surprisingly there is also no wi-fi which would have helped given you’re on an island a long way from signal. The museum also is entirely in German - no English, French or other languages are available (even as paper handouts). Given the number of international visitors this is incredibly disappointing, and the exception from most other museums in the region. Having this available might have lifted the whole experience. What’s also frustrating is the cost - you need to pay for parking, for the boat, for the tour (and even occasionally for the loos!). Why there isn’t a single company running things with an inclusive ticket, I’m not sure. So overall, one of those places you really want to visit because of the fairytale history of Ludwig II. The building and grounds are truly impressive, it’s just a shame the wider experience doesn’t quite live up to what it could be.

Beautiful palace and grounds! The boat schedule is clearly indicated and the prices are correct, since you’re also getting a nice lake cruise. The way to the palace is accessible to both young and elderly, I believe. At the ticket office, the employees speak different languages (they spoke both in French and in English with us, since our German is very poor). You have to have a guided tour to visit the palace, inside, but there are many and the guides are awesome (ours, Saturday 10th Augus, in English, at 13h55, was BRILLIANT!). The palace is beautiful, it’s well worth a visit. You can’t take photos inside, but the souvenir shop has postcards and photo booklets for purchase and they’re of good quality and not expensive. The gardens are also impressive, but there isn’t a lot of shade. The WC is clean. There’s a café-restaurant, but it’s all self-service. It’s not practical when ordering for exemple ice-creams, because the lady there is all alone and has to take orders and prepare the ice-cream cups all alone and it seems rather stressful to her and for people in line waiting for their turn. The prices aren’t exactly cheap neither, but I think most people would prefer to be serviced at the table even if they had to pay a little extra. The boats going back to the main peer can fill up quite quickly and, again, not a lot of shaded areas, so bring sunscreen and a hat.
